North Carolina

A 2 yr old male red golden pheasant. He'll be 3 come late spring, so he has all of his color now. I need to get a new picture of them and I have 2 males (maybe a female) that I need to sell.

I was hoping the weather would NOT get cold again, but now I've joined those hoping for snow. If it snows, at least it'll be pretty while I'm hauling water! Plus, I have an exam scheduled Thursday. I'll bet everyone would be happy to postpone that until the next week! And my daughter's in-laws are coming to visit this weekend, so I need to get my house clean. I could use a snow day or three to clean. I've never met them, although hubby has. I do know that they are city folks, not dog folks, and our old farmhouse is likely going to be a bit rustic for them. "City Slickers meet Country Bumpkins" could be the title for this weekend!

Stay warm, everyone!

Reading this, all I could think of was the movie Meet the Fockers.

I wouldn't worry too much about the house, I love it.

I must admit, that I wouldn't mind playing in the snow some with the kids. But I don't want alot of it.

I need some quail help asap!

I have all of mine in 2 brooders, but now that they're starting to get bigger I've noticed some have some bald spots on their back, I'm assuming from others picking at their feathers. Fortunately none have injuries besides feather loss & no one is eating each other, but I think they need to be separated out into what I am keeping of quints & I need to figure out something to do with the rest because they're still a little small to process.

ANYWAY, trying to get this done while it's still warm, to determine gender on these quail the ones with darker brown on the chest are girls and the ones with lighter chests are boys? Is that correct? They are coturnix quail, & they hatched right after Christmas so they're between 4 & 5 weeks old.
Also some are bigger than others, didn't know if the males or females tended to be larger in quail.

THANK YOU!

Oh my gosh, while I was trying to clean out their cage and move quail into another cage like 4 or 5 of them got away from me because they're so little and quick. Within minutes as I'm running around trying to catch them my turkeys start going crazy & all my chickens who were running the yard ran into their run. I look up & there were 3 huge hawks circling over my house! I've never seen more than 1 at a time before. They got 2 of the quail, I had caught 2, 1 more may still be missing. Fortunately, none of my chickens (or chicks that now free range with them) were injured. I think I scared them away, but I'm afraid if I got back in my house they'll be back....

Dutch.. the Coturnix Quail are at breeding age at 6 weeks. So bald spots on the head is breeding. Too many boys. Ideally....1 boy to 5-6 girls. You can put 10-12 girls with 2 boys for a community pen or in pairs, your choice. IMO community pens are easier.
Boys have a solid camel colored chest and they crow. Hens have a speckled chest.

Good luck with the hawks.

Did ya'll see this????
I go out today, it's gonna be 65 I'm ready to start my garden then I see this!

Went to buy my kids' snow suits, but apparently they don't sell them down here, guess there's usually no need. Better stock up on milk because if we really get 8-12" I bet they shut down everything in the South!

By the way, this pic is off The Weather Channel's website.

May be surprised but I also looked at WRAL and it splits Nash county so we are looking for about 3 all the way to 5 inches. I always said I wanted a foot or nothing..LOL...I was just kidding.. Hate to know I have to dig a way to my chickens!!

They may find that they have a bit of country bumpkin in them if you allow them to help you take care of the animals around your place. It will at least allow them to see where their food comes from!

Okay, thank you!!!
My 2 big pens I had for brooders I put in 12 girls and 2 boys.
Then my 2 smaller rabbit hutches I have 6 girls and a boy in each.
That still left me with 14 extra boys. I put them in a starter coop with lots of food & water so hopefully they don't fight, I'll have to keep an eye on them. DH is away for a week so I'm really hoping I don't have to process before he gets home!
When they are big enough to eat I think I will keep one pen with 2 boys & 10 girls. If the crowing gets loud I'll just keep some girls for the eggs :)

Just saw they already closed Cumberland County schools for tomorrow. I was thinking they may be early release because it's supposed to start around 3-4pm.
