North Carolina

I have a question I hope I can get some help with.

We acquired two large black cochins and this last show in morganton and the guy says they are a year and half old. What I find weird is why none of her eggs are fertilized. Why is he not doing his job and the rooster? How can I get them to mate and do large cochins have problems mating with all the feathers? Thanks!

I have yet to see any (bantam cochins, large cochins, red productions) mate. I am not a voyeur but shouldn't chickens be mating?

Trim the feather around their vent area, I do this with my girls just to keep them cleaner, is your rooster large or small? and since you just got them on Sat. maybe their still getting aquainted

The rooster is very large. They are very loveey to each other. She sleeps with her head under his belly. I will work on trimming their feathers, that is a good idea because it is messy for them with their big feathers.

Pretty much all your heavier feathered birds do have some conception issues, most people trim or pull fluff to help increase it. Also if he is a rooster who is in second breeding season he may not be in hurry "to do the deed" when the weather is still cold. Most will wait till it warms up a bit to become more vigorous. Hope this helps a bit.

All of mine are in their own breeding pens either in the barn (bantams) or big outdoor runs/coops (large fowl). It really is the only way you can keep track of what is going on with who.

Do you keep them in their breeding pens when you notice them start to breed or at a special time of year? How long do you keep them in the pen? Do you have any pictures of what a breeding pen looks like?

Thanks!

For any of you Carolinians who may be looking for any birds I have a few of my stock available:
