Our coop is an open coop but I do have it enclosed for the winter - come to think of it I need to get a pic of it enclosed for my BYC page.. I am not a expert by no means but i think I would let them enjoy the day outside and being them in at night.. but then please remember no wind, rain can get to them the way my coop is enclosed

that's just my 2 little cents for the day, maybe it helps a little

Thanks for all the help everyone. Do I get the invermectin at TSC also? About how much does that run do you know? Thanks!

Michael,

Go up to your TSC or farm store and buy a bottle of Adams Flea & Tick "Shampoo". Put a few caps full in a bucket of warm water and set her in it and give her a bath like you would a dog. (minus her face) You can take a rag and wash her bottom and underneath, you will probably see tiny little mites on the rag. Let her just sit in the water for a few minutes, the adams will help kill all her external parasites. Have another bucket of warm water with a a few caps of white vinegar in it, when she is all washed put her in the rinse bucket, using a cup pour the rinse water all over her (helps remove soap residue). Lightly wring her out and wrap her in a towel to dry. You can also take a blow dryer to her to help dry her. Just make sure she is completely dry before you put her back outside.

Next get you some Ivermectin "Cattle" Pour-On. If she is a bantam it is 1/4 cc/ml and you apply that to the base of her neck. (where she cannot reach around to it) Right on the skin like you would put frontline on a dog. PS-apply once she is completely dry.

Last but not least If you have any of the vita-electrolytes powder add a bit to her water for the day and you may also want to scramble an egg and feed it to her as if she is pale a bit lethargic it may help perk her back up.

Good morning everyone!!

First off...
welcome-byc.gif
Jagger & Ramirez!!

Secondly...it's official...

I have used my feminine charms and my husband has agreed to build the coop!!

He has given me a budget to work with, but hey, that's FINE with me. I am sure I can find some STEALS when it comes to things. For those of you building...I saw this suggestion on the coop forum and HAD to pass it along. Someone posted, "check out your local window installers, usually they have leftover windows from replacing a homeowners and they have to pay to dispose of them. You can get them for free usually!!" - HOW COOL IS THAT? I'm officially going to start stalking the area looking for new construction.

It can't hurt!! I will keep a tally and let you all know what kind of steals I've received!!

Vfem - thank you for sharing about mypetchicken...I just want two wyandottes, and maybe a Deleware, Australorp, Brahma or Jersey giant, but didn't think I'd find a place where I could get just a few. MANY MANY Thanks!!

Ok so here is what I want...lol and he can buy it from Lowes for a mere $2500!!
sickbyc.gif
I'm going to see if we can build it for a fraction of that!!

The challenge is ON!

Here is what my husband's designed (using googlesketch...which he stayed up for hours playing with....):
Front view:

Back view:

Top View, the right side is now the rooster/broody area with a removable partition wall, I think we'll also make a storage area over there too since there's a LOT of room.

Still no window spots, but that's because he says those can be added to the design later. We're still trying to figure out where a good place to put them. Our nesting boxes face East & West, the back of the coop would then face south (shaded by the woods) and the front would face north (and the run). Looking at this can you think of any suggestions?

Edited to ask: Does anyone know how to post pictures on their page?? I can't figure it out...

Good idea!

When she's dry, and you put everyone together in the coop put some DE in the bedding and where they can dust bath in it. I try to rub down my birds once or twice a season.

Ivermectin runs about $18-$19 but it will last a long time as it is a very good size bottle. The adams shampoo is I believe around $10-$11. You can get them both at TSC.

I have been researching ducks and I wouldn't mind having a pair of Welsh Harlequin. They don't fly, they are very calm and docile, lay bunches of eggs, and still know how to set. I wonder if you can place an order with TSC so you don't have to pay all the money for shipping with the hatchery.

NewHomesteader2010, I PM'd you. I think I can help you out a bit on the build. Its wonderful being a collector of junk & having a carpenter for a husband.

Vfem - you have NO idea how much you just made my day!! I'm STILL hugging my computer out of excitement. I guess it's a good thing the baby is down for a nap or else I might squeeze her to death from all the excitement!!
