Hello fellow NCers,
Have a ? I am using organic feed that i purchase at a farm here locally. they order once a month and I am getting ready to put my order in. By the time the feed gets here teh chicks will be 5-6 weeks old...My quesiton is should I continue with starter or move to the scratch...I know the layers feed is out of the quesiton, so I am thinking about doing 50lbs of scratch (I assume scratch is mash) and 50lbs of starter and mix them...I guess I just need to know when is a good time to move up from starter...TIA...

At about 8 weeks I start mixing some corn or scratch(wheat/corn mix) into their starter. I adjust the mix as they grow, reducing the amount of starter. 14 weeks I start mixing in laying pellets. By 20-22 weeks they are on the adult mix of corn/scratch and Laying pellets.

If you starter mixing in corn or scratch the chicks will need some grit for their gizzards. I have them on the ground by then at least on warm days, so they get their on grit from the dirt/sand that they play around in.

Yes, stay with the chick feed until they are 18 weeks old. I have run out before at 16-17 weeks and just swapped then.

However, Scratch is more of a 'treat' and doesn't include all the nutrients layers need. Try to get a layer mash or pellet if you can when they are of age. I also add oyster shell for extra calcium during the heavy laying seasons of Spring & summer.

Good luck!

I went to it last week... DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.... there were about 20 scraggly chickens and 1 goat. I drove over an hour, what a waste!!!!!

I was going to ask if anyone had gone to that.... What about the Wicked Chicken auction in Clayton? Anyone know anything about that?

Hey NH....great coop plans.
But I do have a question, I have seen you mention before....why do you want to keep your rooster seperate.???? He can stay with the hens forever!!! Will even help with chicks if you decide to hatch under a broody. He is their protector, he shows them treats and lets them eat first, sleeps snuggles up with them, he will even dance for them.
just thought I'd add my 2 cents..

I haven't gone to the Clayton one yet... someone here went 2 weekends ago to sell one of their birds. I was dying to know how it turned out, I would like to run up there one of these weekends and see how its going. They publicize it well!
