I was going to ask if anyone had gone to that.... What about the Wicked Chicken auction in Clayton? Anyone know anything about that?

I haven't gone to the Clayton one yet... someone here went 2 weekends ago to sell one of their birds. I was dying to know how it turned out, I would like to run up there one of these weekends and see how its going. They publicize it well!

vfem I went to the auction in clayton, it is run well and clean, can't vouch for every animal. I did get a very sweet & pretty pair of bantam cochin. I was early enough to check out the animals and spotted them. They had mites/lice, which I was not surprised or worried about. They are in quarentine for a min of 30 days anyway so are automaticly wormed and debugged. I have also sold a bunch. Took 13 there and sold them all. I plan on going again, I have 2 more roosters and I am waiting on my next hatchs to see what I don't want. I have 60 plus eggs due to hatch next week.

I may go in a few weeks then, my quarentine pen currently has a broody sitting on eggs in it. I won't get any more birds until the chicks hatch so I can move the babies and mama back to the main coop. Once that's free I'm go check it out... I may have some extra chicks I need to sell anyways. Let me know how to go about selling with them when that time comes.

O I was thinking about some extra silkie roos and silkie cross roos I have and my dads got extra fbc maran roos. But I aint trading a healthy nicely fed bird for a sick under fed one.

Thanks for the information. Maybe we should do the wicken chicken thing. Any one near Fayetteville have an extra polish roo? Dont have to be sq and would perfer a sliver one but will take anything. I can pay or trade silkie roos or silkie cross roos or a sumtra cross roo, maybe if I talk really sweet my dad, he will let me trade a fbc maran roo. All of these minus a silkie cochin blue roo are under a year the blue is just under 2 years old. Thanks for the help.

That's lice eggs. The only way you can remove them is by pulling out the feathers they are stuck to, or you can wait until they hatch (two weeks) and apply the Sevin dust again. Keep the chicken in quarantine at least three weeks until you don't see anything. As a final check I would give her a bath and check really well when the feathers are wet, you can see much better what’s on her skin. When you dust her, cover her up really well with the powder. I managed to clean and save three hens that were so full with lice, and skinny, that I couldn't believe they were still alive.

Thanks to all for the responses on the feed and switching...Looks like 100 lbs of starter...What do ya'll use as treats for the younger ones...I have seen scrambled egg, but what else? I need something that will make them like me

BHep - AWE!! I had NO idea a roo does all of that. I almost wish my husband was like that. (SHHHH
tongue2.gif
) The only reason I wanted to keep him separate was because ... well ... I think my husband is deathly afraid of eating a ... fertilized egg.
lau.gif
Honestly, that was the only reason!! He keeps talking about making sure we know who's been bred with whom...and so yeah.
gig.gif
- I had to do SOMETHING to appease his fears...although I did see chicken "panties"

Suggestions?? Will you ever know if an egg has been fertilized? (assuming the hen hasn't gone broody)
hu.gif
If one of the hens decides (and we're at the point we let her) to hatch some, won't she want/need to be separated from the others, or will she be fine where she's at? : hu As you can see...we still have a LOT to learn!! Thank you so much for all of your help everyone!!

Is there a large selection of birds? And how high do the bids usually go? I'm thinking about going this weekend.

OOhh... Vfem - if you go, you'll have to let me know!! I might need to "accidentally" find my way there with my husband to see what sort of chicks you have....I mean to MEET you...yeah, that's it!! Especially since Clayton is actually "close" to me (although close is so relative to me...everything is a 25 minute drive.

Vfem

You can start bringing in birds at 10am until 1pm. All you need is ID (divers licence) Most use a cardboard box, box goes with bird/birds. Auction starts at 2pm until done. I got mine there at 11 and boxes were numbered 50-57 so my boxes were auctioned off by 2:30. You can drop them off and go back anytime before they are done and collect your $ as soon as your boxes are sold. Both times I was there, there were about 300 boxes. IMO drop of early...leave and go back. That is what I did.
money is x animals in box. If there are 2 animals in a box and the bid is 10 = $20.
I have been running adds on CL for months....sell 2 or 3 here or there. I sold everyone at once and made same or better money then adds on CL.

NOW....there is a 2% commision to auction and if your box does not sell you have to pay $1. So keep that in mind.

They sell all kinds of birds, eggs, rabbits and other furries, goats, pigs, cages, feeder etc...

Everyone there is super nice and helpful, they will help unload, sign you in etc.

I did mark on my boxes what was in there and age and whatever you think important. example.... 2 silkie chicks...3 months old. or 1 bantam rooster 1 yr old, wormed 2/11. etc....

I saw others do that and thought it was a good idea...Some do nothing.

Any other question I will be happy to help or you can call (#on CL add) I called and realized that I had bought some layers from the girl running it a few months prior. She is real nice & helpful... This has been a sucessful venture for her. Why didnt I think of it.

Best advice...swing by at auction time and watch....it is very entertaining. My kids love it! As long as they keep their hands in their pockets.
