Hey y'all! I've been so busy with getting the kids into a routine with school, that I've not had time to get on and update about Speckles.

She's doing better! Still a bit wobbly when she stands up too fast or tries to move too quickly, but getting more and more steady every day. Yesterday she even laid an egg! I'm hoping it was nothing more than a really bad concussion. Fingers crossed that she continues to improve.

Also, there is a new feed store near me that just opened recently, so I stopped in today to check things out. They carry Carolina Pride brand feed. Does anyone use this brand? Is it any good? I'm currently feeding NatureWise by Nutrena, and price-wise it's comparable to what I'm currently feeding (except the chick feed is a few dollars more and is medicated. I prefer to feed non-medicated chick starter), so if it's a good brand to feed, I may start going there instead. Any input would be great!

Good morning folks

It is amazing how just a few days of cooler and wet weather
can change the seasonal mood of people. Businesses are
putting up fall and holiday decorations. People are talking
about holiday plans and not beach vacations. A lot of plants
are like they have paused a moment......not growing vigorously
and not dieing back. We are coming into decoration season.

I have to rant for a minute or two. I went to go look at some potential new chicks from a lady near Jacksonville. She supposedly had all these beautiful rare birds. So I went and was informed that she had chicks available . I had just bought 25 chicks and had room for a few more. Upon arrival I saw 4 chickens crammed into a small dog kennel. Right away I could tell this wasn't a good place for chickens. Her stock was wet, standing on top of each other, no food or water and completely filthy with their own poo. Not one chicken was free range or even had a run. Note there are 40 chickens, 4 to each crate. She let me over to her "chick stash". Standing in a 5 gallon bucket where 30 day old bitties. It was heart breaking. Again no food or water, standing in their own filth. Most where so crusty they couldn't move their head or wings and where very cold. Did I mention they had no light... Well I didn't get any bitties but on my way to my car I heard the faintest peeping coming from a bush. I walked over and found 2 chicks, cold, wet, starving, their fluff was hard and crusty. I grabbed the babies and took them to the lady. She took one look at them and said that they aren't gonna make it that I could take them. So I did. One looks to be a Cochin but I have no clue what the other is. Feathers are way to dirty to see. With in hours of getting them to my house. I had them warmed, eating and drinking. And where running around. I currently have a strong motherly Silkie with them for comfort and support. Things are looking up so far. I hope they stay that way.

I so understand. Since starting my backyard flock I have been appalled at what I have seen. I have been to the auction in Mt. Airy and then the TSC swap 1 time. Conditions and the way animals are treated in certain circumstances. The auction was painful to be there and see hundreds of people observe the same thing and it's OK. That's a level of agriculture I cannot support. Chick mills are real. Report them. Or rescue them yourself. I have done my own version of that from Craigslist ads. It's a growing problem. SO. A breath of fresh air is a store with a passion and love for small livestock but also equestrian ++ http://www.theurbanchickennc.com
They are in Raleigh near the airport. FLOCK SWAP THIS SAT. SEPT. 13. RAIN OR SHINE.

Good morning folks

There are promises of some damp weather today.........hope it's
a gentle warm rain and not gully washers. It's funny to see the
antics some of the kids will go through when it rains. They won't
carry an umbrella but will run to a person who happens to have one.
They will wear plastic shopping bags on their hair and over their
shoes, the same kids who will talk a person down for not dressing
up in the priciest of clothes. Kids today do not understand the value
of playing in the puddles and getting a little dirty.

Hi
I am in GSO/KVL/WS area. What's the feed store name?
Our local Ace in Walkertown carries a good price on local milled feed but it has animal by products and I am all grain. My best price for RocknRooster for example is at the TSC locally owned but it's in King. I work in Winston so not bad. It's 12.99 50lbs. I will be in Raleigh saturday at the Urban Chicken flock swap. Not too far from you. I know some folks that come from Mebane. Tim.
