Quote: All, I wanted to ask for your thoughts on the sex of this chicken. He was sold to me as a sexed male. He was also sold as a standard size, which is clearly not right. He's the same size as my silkie. I am also seriously questioning whether this is really a cockerel. I haven't seen any eggs yet, but his coop is not lit, so that could be due to daylight hours. I also have seen zero signs of trying to mate or crow or act like a rooster in any way. There are no other adult roosters in the flock and he's low on the pecking order, but not the bottom. And I'm not good at this, but the saddle and hackle feathers look quite rounded to me. He's just over 6 months old (28 weeks). Thanks in advance!

That's a pullet no if an's or butts about it. Do you need a male to go with her?

Also I have read and pretty sure I have seen on the news about bear hunting on the coast of NC.

Yes there are bear in the Green swamps of NC. My brother bear hunts. We never see any on the very coast though. We do have Bobcats there and they are death to chickens, cyotes, fox, oppossum, hawks are a real menace.and racoons too. If close to a waterway you may have mink. Stray dogs and cats can kill a hen if they are hungry enough. I put wire under the dirt and 2 ft out from it underground and I put wire across the top of my runs. I have an enclosed coop that I shut the poop door on down there at night. Animals are very resourceful, and sneaky. I am down there sometimes in the winter. I do the same for the mtns of NC, where I am most of the time. The only problem I seem to have is mole runs being used by rats to get to feed under a covered overhang of the coop. I have wire on theis area and under it but sometimes they still get through.

Its always a battle.

I have never seen a weasel or mink but have heard that they're very small. Can 1"x2" wire be used on their runs or do I need to go smaller? Thanks for everyone's response and help

Took her to the vet. They said she has an allergy to flea saliva causing her to rip her hair out. Thus in taking way more fur than just cleaning herself. She has a blockage of hair in her small intestine 3 inches long. They gave me cat lax to administer once a day for 5 days and then again after just as a maintaining thing. They gave her fluids and a shot for nausea and gave her revolution flea meds that treats worms as well. But she doesn't have those worms it treats. She has tape worm. *yucky it was 120 bucks for everything. They were fantastic! East wake animal hospital. I explained my situation to them and they said they wouldn't do anything I couldn't afford and added up for me prior to me paying so I would know what I was getting into. I highly recommend them to anyone who has a sick "baby" at home. :) now I just gotta wait for her to poop out the huge fur ball. Gross. I really hope and pray that's all that is wrong with her.

So glad to hear the good news. Best wishes to the both of you for a speedy and full recovery

Clousert,
Its best to put them in a building at nite for protection. During the day 2x4 wire is good. I also put the 1/2 inch x4 ft. wire two feet out and two feet up the sides of the run. I cover the bottom part with soil. You have to build fort knox.

During the day the most persistent are the hawks. 2x4 wire on top will also keep them out. if it is attached good. Good luck with you hens.

Good morning folks

It's a tad cooler this morning......for old ladies who are
collecting frequent flier miles on personal tropical vacations,
these cooler temps can be comfortable.

It just might be good temps for getting some work done outside
...... now if lets see if it holds out for the weekend when I have
the chance to get things done outside, otherwise I might have
to stay inside and attempt to bake something

hope everyone has a good day
