My Australorps and my California White never slowed down all summer.

I was nervous about having a Wyandotte, but she hasn't shown any particular signs of distress. Neither has the Brahma (oddly, their thick feathers seem to insulate them from heat as well as cold -- up to a point, at least).

Any Mediterranean breed can be expected to do well in the heat and the classic American farmyard breeds are widely adaptable. :)

Good morning @3KillerBs, thank you for your reply. I would like to find a hardy dual purpose pure breed of chook to start raising and preferably a breed that is very acclimated to the NC weather swings.

Also a breed that has a history of docile roosters, I was so tired of being challenged every morning and evening by our Rooster ( RIP Chewy ) LOL when I would go out to the coop.

I had my heart set on a New Hampshire breed as a great dual chicken choice, but I am so undecided now after doing so much reading on all the different breeds. :barnie

I just thought maybe there were some NC members who might have this dilemma of mine all figured out for me. LOL

With the flock expanding I'm looking at managing feed costs.

Can anyone recommend a local mill in/near Moore County where I could get a better deal on 18-20% all-flock type feed in 50# bags (I can't store lose bulk feed), than I'm getting at Carthage Farm Supply or Aberdeen Feed?

(I love the Kalmbach feed I was getting at Aberdeen Feed but since we moved to Carthage it's awkward to run the traffic circle and their hours don't mesh with our work hours very well -- which makes me sad because I LOVE that store).

Roosters are a gamble. My in-town Light Brahma lived up to the Brahma reputation for laid-back roosters but I'm not getting one for this flock because I don't want late maturity and low egg production as part of my ongoing flock genetics.

I've been happy with chicks from Ideal. Since they're in Texas their breeders are adapted to heat even if they're not necessarily "heat-tolerant" breeds. I don't do ice and misting and all that stuff for heat -- I just give them plenty of shade, electrolytes once a week when it's over 95F, good ventilation, and access to ground that they can dig into cooler layers. I haven't had a heat stress issue last summer or this summer and I never had an issue in my in-town flock.

I understand the breed indecision thing. Sometime serendipity happens -- I just LOVE the Blue Australorps I got from Welp via Carolina Town and Country last year. I wouldn't have gotten them except that I had to choose from what was available and they didn't get the Delawares I'd gone there for. :)

Bantam Salmon Faverolles Rooster looking for new flock in WNC.

This is Lloyd. He was hatched from eggs purchased from Snobby Silkies & Faverolles in Georgia. He is approx 1 1/2 years old. Asking $25 or best offer. Can meet in Weaverville, Asheville, or other areas within similar distance.

This guy found a new flock over the weekend. Thanks!

I have a 3-month-old Speckled Sussex roo. He isn't aggressive to me at all but he is scaring my bantam hens so much some have taken to hiding inside the coop. He came as a pullet with 5 others but he sure isn't one. I am North of Asheville if anyone is interested.
