North Carolina

I’m in Western NC - Waynesville/Haywood County. I have a free rooster I need to re-home (or as a last effort give to someone who wants to eat him). Casper is a Whitings True Blue, so he only carries the blue egg gene, making him perfect for a flock of Easter eggers wanting to up their blue and green egg numbers. He was hatched 3-22-24 so he’s 9 months old, I got him in June. He was supposed to be a hen… (shocking I know). My issue is I already have Scarlette, a year and a half old Rhode Island Red that also decided to identify as male, after I bought 2 “female” chicks at a local store to try to break a broody who was starving herself to death trying to hatch rocks… and I only have 13 hens, so they are getting too much male attention. I was happy with no rooster and here I have 2! Casper has to avoid Scarlette, so I’m not sure how he would behave if he were the only rooster. He does tidbit, does cover the girls, isn’t mean to them but as second fiddle he is a horny devil sneaking up around the edges when he has a chance. I live on the side of a mountain with bears, bobcats, coyotes, coons and everything else that eats chicken and thus have to keep my ladies locked in a lot in the winter when there is no cover for free ranging, and with no room to spread out and get away my 13 ladies have politely requested that Casper relocate. He has not been around children, my guess is he might try to chase them as he has come up and bumped my ankle once recently- I think he was trying to outrank me but he really doesn’t even have spurs and based on the one time I saw him fighting with Scarlette neither is very aggressive or mean. He doesn’t eat out of my hand but again that’s probably because Scarlette DOES and Casper is at the bottom of the pecking order (the higher up girls chase him if he bothers them). So he never has a chance. I think he would be best as

an only rooster with a dozen or so hens or free ranging in a larger group. Anyone want him? Happy to provide more pictures, he’s very pretty and the rust bits on his wings are not blood- just speckles.

He's a handsome fella!

Have you tried listing him local on Craigslist or if it's admissible to social media like FB?

You can also list him in the rehoming threads here on BYC.

I hope you are able to find him a home. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/animals-in-need-of-free-re-homing.16182/

Thanks. I put him on Nextdoor; I’m not on Facebook but I will try to find someone who is. I also called the lady who sold him to me (she didn’t want him but offered me another pullet next year so that was nice of her) and another chicken keeper/seller I know who only knows people who would eat him. I’ll try Craig’s list and also planned to put a note on the feed and seed bulletin board, except it washed away in the flood… a lot of people around here are still recovering so their thoughts aren’t on chickens…☹️. I’ll keep him for now, I don’t cull, don’t hatch (for that reason) and keep all my retirees (assuming something doesn’t eat them…) so I’m hoping for a happy ending for all!

I know many are still hurting very much; it's going to take years I think for all of us to get over this if at all. It's just been awful for so many. We made it through o.k., but it's been very heartbreaking.

I'd try to stress in the CL ad, that he's a good boy, his blue genes and all that. You may even want to charge a minor fee something like $10-15 to start, just so people may find value in him like you do.

Is the Clyde TSC closed too? TSC usually has a bulletin board near the restrooms where you can post animals, so if you are near them, it's something to consider doing.
