Coop update: boy...am I tired!! We have the roof up and shingled, most of the walls up and the first coat of paint on. I am with DD at the moment while the DH tries to finish the speciality cuts. Its been a LONG day...been at it almost 12 hours now and a bit disappointed. We were hoping to have it finished with just the touch ups left, but we won't be getting the windows in or the doors on, nor will the pop door be installed. That all will have to wait until next Saturday...guess the chicks will be "indoors" for a day or two. As you can tell...bummed its not done. I know we've only put 30 hours into the build...and Rome wasn't built in a few days either so I should be happy, right?? The DH is disappointed too...but that's because he sees all his "flaws". I will post another photo as soon as we call it a night.

Edited to post pictures:
This is the photo of the barn in progress...we had to RUSH to put the sheets and finish putting at least one coat of paint on before the rain. Not sure how the mad dash to paint will turn out, but ended up getting quite a bit done!!

This is the picture I took upon the ladder before I was fired for making the shingles "crooked"...

apparently you are suppose to line up the shingles according to the tar paper and not the top parts that get covered....oops!!

At least my first 3 are straight!!

NewHomesteader - I know the feeling. I was hoping to get the frame and floor for the coop done this weekend, but the humidity from last nights rain made me a little concrete shy. We did however, get the brooder box ready. It's roughly 37 inches by 34 inches rectangle and 2 feet high. The odd dimensions are because we recycled some kind of pallet (which I love cause it had these big blue 'feet' on them to keep it off the ground!).

Anyway, it's been in the upper 60s most of the day and according to my thermometer, the brooder space under the lamp is running about 90 degrees. The brooder is out in the garage and we had the big bay door open most of the day. We'll probably be keeping the door open a LOT out there for ventilation once we get the 'lid' on the brooder (probably next week I'll get that done).

I am a little worried about temperature regulation. As we all know, mother nature doesn't know if its summer or winter! I don't want them to roast on a 85 degree day but many 70 degree days like today and I'll be worried if they are warm enough.

I'll post pictures of my box tommorrow. It's nothing special, just 4 walls and a floor.

Just wanted to stop for a minute and tell all of you east of the mts. to get prepared we had some really bad thunder storms with lightening and alot of hail so hope you don't get it but wanted to let you know in case you do.. I finally got everyone put up but that hail was something else and the lightening wow, be safe. And Remember Ruthann, your chickens will love what you and Dh have built for them, they aren't in to perfection just a safe haven. Bless ya'll and good night.

Congrats on your pips. hope you have chicks soon, they are so adorable flopping around and finding their legs and climbing all over the the other eggs. I have some eggs going into lock down tomorrow, Last ones before the big Easter hatch.

Well off to the once a year horse show, I need to help my trainer finish up the clipping and bathing on my stallion and her mare.

Horses???? Did I hear Horses?????? LOL.....just a wee bit horse crazy myself. What breed are yours? We have a few too for pleasure....no showing. Just a small personal zoo here
big_smile.png

I have Arabs as my personal horses and I have fostered many different breeds. Right now I have a TB? foster that came in with an injury that left him with String Halt. My Stallion stays with my trainer and I get to see him a couple of times a year as he is in Lumberton 90 miles away. I have his Mom ( older mare with a broken foot and my 3/4 arab mare that I ride once every 2 years or so.

My boy shows Dressage, this is his 3rd show under saddle and he has so far placed third and fourth in his classes.

picture o chick two and three(same one?) Look like BLRW they have the right stripes and comb
big_smile.png

Nope, that's the BLRW I just know is a roo. Runs around with his wings up and is soo big! But my mystery chick is the one in the hatching pic - it's dark grey with a little fuzzy yellow tummy, has a black beak and turns out slightly feathered black legs! He does have the single comb also, but he is not a Wyandotte! But I have no clue what he is. Sorry, I cannot get a decent picture of him!!! And I'm pitiful - I can't even tell the black Orpingtons apart from the black copper Marans that doesn't have feathered legs!! Dope! I keep trying!

Also, my 14th egg pipped a couple times on one side forever ago. Now I just discovered instead of zipping he has turned completely and pipped the other side of the egg. Is he going to have the energy to keep going starting all over again!?? He's also getting a little too much "help" from his buds who desperately need to move out and into the brooder! They're getting a little stir crazy in there. Do you think once this one hatches if there are still no pips in the other two I can move them out quickly? I can crank up my humidifier for a minute and it will fog the whole thing up. Love that froggy! Any tips for me????

NH - the coop is awesome! great job!!
