Try Shooks Poultry in Claremont, NC. They provide four or five breeds of 'Started Pullets'. Very reasonably priced at about $6.50 each for 18 week old pullets. I got 19 Gold Comets from them last spring and they have been the very best layers ever! They started laying at 22 weeks and we've been getting 17 - 19 eggs each and every day almost without fail, even with all this miserable weather here in the Carolinas for the past three months. Look 'em up on the internet.

I haven't heard of them before here, but I have heard of Murray's Hatchery here...

They're just off of Hwy 10 on the north side about a mile or so out of town. Go to this web site for their address:

Shook used to sell all kinds of chicks but went with the started pullets this or last year. Probably easier financially to keep up with just a few breeds and all that they had. You can't go wrong with Sexlinks of any color. Laying Machines!!

We've gotten all 30 of our pullets from Shooks over the past 18 months or so and we've been happy with them. Ours are the Gold Comets but I wanted to get some of the Black Sex Links back in May when we got our last 11 but they are only selling GC's this year. Last year they had GC's, BSL's, Barred Rocks, and White Leghorns. Great price and healthy chickens too. The only negative is they sell only debeaked pullets which if I had my druthers I'd not do. But I think they get them from a breeder and don't have a choice either.

I've never heard of Shooks and I've lived in Claremont since 2006... That is about 5 min from my house lol... I mapped it. They only sell started pullets and barred rock chicks now.

yeah the debeaked thing turned me off too. I thought it was an unecessary feature. I prefer mine with a beak. We plan to look in to Murrays Hatchery on 70 its right at the edge of Claremont going towards Catawba.

I might be interested in getting some bantams from Murray's if they have them!

The birds that Shook sells come from his supplier already debeaked. He has no choice in the matter.

Just a note: Shook poultry and Murray's hatchery are less then half a mile apart. Until this year I loved getting chicks from Shook. I wish they would go back to selling chicks next year, but I doupt it. If anyone finds details out about Murray's please post it here. I always prefer avoiding the shipping part of getting hatchery chicks and with the new laws many hatcheries will no longer be able to ship to NC starting April 1, 2011.

Yep, I've seen the building, it looks nice and well kept from the road. It is right on 70 but the building sits back from the road and it looks older.. I wonder how they are with beaks. My hubby agreed that he couldn't handle having debeaked ones. They'd have no protection as ours are free range. Our young ones fl in and out of their coop, but our 2 yr old stay in unless the gate comes open with the ducks.
