Thought I would share a couple of pictures of my silkies I took this morning. Sure hope they end up to be a pair.

They are just 6 weeks old yesterday. If I'm not mistaken I believe that they are lav split as well!

Thanks ML, it's a cuckoo, should be beautiful when it's grown.

Here's a few of my cochins, so depressed- the most of them have turned out to be cockerels. I have one pullet for sure and still on the fence about on other. Out of 7 that is only 2 possibly girls.

Beautiful boys, just not keeping any of them, posted pics of them on the under 8 week sale page.

This pic has my pullets and one that I thought was a pullet and started looking like a cockerel just today.

your bantam mottled orp. is georgeous, be sure to post as she grows so we can see her tranformation. and sorry you ended up with so many boys out of your cochins, they sure are pretty though, you'll not have any problems finding them homes.

<sigh> So we spent the early morning working on the coop. A few notes to self and others who are building coops...be sure to put the inside walls up BEFORE you put down bedding and introduce the chickens to their home.
gig.gif
it was such a pain to shovel/sweep so we could put walls up. I decided to leave the walls alone on the inside...not bothering to paint them - it was an executive decision once the gang had moved into the coop. I didn't want them getting overwhelmed with fumes, and it's not THAT necessary anyway. I won't even begin to mention trying to keep the shavings out of the paint being a challenge that helped us to sway towards not painting either!!

I am so proud of myself...DH "let" me build the nesting boxes and because we were running out of screws, I only ended up making 2 out of the 8 planned. Although at the moment with only 4 girls, 2 might be enough!!
hu.gif
DH came up with a "fun" idea for a roost. We took some scrap wood and built a "ladder" from the scraps and thick branches that fell down after the wave of storms we've had, became the rungs. The miter saw worked them over well so they fit, and one was covered with worms that the roos thought was the BEST treat ever!! Another note: black grasshoppers (no, I'm not talking about crickets...unlike my DH, I do know the difference
lau.gif
) BITE!! I picked up one, and it BIT my hand. I was going to let it go, but after that form of aggression, it was an instant snack for my Jeremy!! Haha...take THAT!! I have to admit
hide.gif
that I have been accused of "teasing" the chickens because every frog/toad that is in the building area gets released into the woods out of "harms" way!! What??
hu.gif
I still adore froggies!! I cannot say the same for the HUGE lizard that was wandering around in the run yesterday...he was worked over quite well, and I was rather disgusted to see that after the tail was ripped off, it was still wiggling in Cotton-tails mouth!!
sickbyc.gif
DH enjoys watching the flock run and grab parts of the lizard away from whomever has it and run only to repeat the process! I will admit to being HUGELY disappointed because we were completely done with walls, roost, nesting boxes all before 11am, and rather than put up the final 2 doors on the barn (the interior double doors), DH decided he had had enough building for the day.
sad.png
I wanted to get it done because that left only the trim and some touch-up painting left to do.
sad.png
Oh well, he who rules the power tools gets to schedule the work hours...
gig.gif
I think he's getting burnt out on building this barn...I guess I shouldn't tell him I want to get some more pullets and will need a quarantine area....just yet!!

Have a great afternoon everyone!!

HT - LOVED your pictures...they sure are gorgeous. I can't wait to see what most of them look like fully grown!!

To all the new people I say

Hello from Johnston County!! Glad to have you here!!

Frogs & toads eat "skeeters", so they get to stay. If we find one too close to the chickens, we release it under our security light. Tons of bugs hang out there.

Be glad you all (or at least most of you) are not downwind from the wildfire. Yesterday the constant smell of smoke triggered a migraine and I accomplished exactly zero. I hoped today would be better, but no. The pain is gone (thank GOD) but my energy is still missing in action. I hate to plan work for Sundays, so tomorrow will be another mostly rest day.

to all the new folks.......welcome to the madness
