<sigh> So we spent the early morning working on the coop. A few notes to self and others who are building coops...be sure to put the inside walls up BEFORE you put down bedding and introduce the chickens to their home.
it was such a pain to shovel/sweep so we could put walls up. I decided to leave the walls alone on the inside...not bothering to paint them - it was an executive decision once the gang had moved into the coop. I didn't want them getting overwhelmed with fumes, and it's not THAT necessary anyway. I won't even begin to mention trying to keep the shavings out of the paint being a challenge that helped us to sway towards not painting either!!
I am so proud of myself...DH "let" me build the nesting boxes and because we were running out of screws, I only ended up making 2 out of the 8 planned. Although at the moment with only 4 girls, 2 might be enough!!
DH came up with a "fun" idea for a roost. We took some scrap wood and built a "ladder" from the scraps and thick branches that fell down after the wave of storms we've had, became the rungs. The miter saw worked them over well so they fit, and one was covered with worms that the roos thought was the BEST treat ever!! Another note: black grasshoppers (no, I'm not talking about crickets...unlike my DH, I do know the difference
) BITE!! I picked up one, and it BIT my hand. I was going to let it go, but after that form of aggression, it was an instant snack for my Jeremy!! Haha...take THAT!! I have to admit
that I have been accused of "teasing" the chickens because every frog/toad that is in the building area gets released into the woods out of "harms" way!! What??
I still adore froggies!! I cannot say the same for the HUGE lizard that was wandering around in the run yesterday...he was worked over quite well, and I was rather disgusted to see that after the tail was ripped off, it was still wiggling in Cotton-tails mouth!!
DH enjoys watching the flock run and grab parts of the lizard away from whomever has it and run only to repeat the process! I will admit to being HUGELY disappointed because we were completely done with walls, roost, nesting boxes all before 11am, and rather than put up the final 2 doors on the barn (the interior double doors), DH decided he had had enough building for the day.
I wanted to get it done because that left only the trim and some touch-up painting left to do.
Oh well, he who rules the power tools gets to schedule the work hours...
I think he's getting burnt out on building this barn...I guess I shouldn't tell him I want to get some more pullets and will need a quarantine area....just yet!!
Have a great afternoon everyone!!
HT - LOVED your pictures...they sure are gorgeous. I can't wait to see what most of them look like fully grown!!
