Coop - Thanks for the heads up. Didn't know that would be illegal - glad I didn't touch "her" or anything like that then too!! "She" sure was adorable. I am happy to hear that momma was probably close by - she was probably eating/foraging in the coyote infested woods then.
Haha...I bet my week old unmowed grass resembled a meadow too!!
Chicken - Benson is not near me, I don't think..(40-45 mins per GoogleMaps).
We're in Middlesex, somewhere between Wendell & Clayton (which translates to the middle of NOWHERE...just ask Gavin...he's had to try to find us before)
Thank you so much for the offer though. That was so sweet!! Our BYC'ers are the BEST!!
The DH talked with our neighbor who use to have chickens (he free ranged and lost them all to the coyotes/foxes/coons and refused to build a shelter so just threw in the towel on having more...he's aging and still working as a full time farmer, so I suspect it was just an added "hassle" that he didn't want, especially since he said he was so fond of them - as we all can attest to) - anyway, he has agreed to check on them in the morning when he goes out to his fields and in the evening when he comes home. What more can we ask for? There is a water pump right next to the barn so no hauling water (I also put up several additional waterers, especially because it's so HOT), we nailed (temporarily) one set of the hardware cloth doors shut but left the outer doors open for more ventilation and the windows will be left open (he said he would check if it rains to be sure they don't get wet) which all are covered with hardware cloth. The other two sets of doors are secure - they have bolts on the top & bottom that need unlatching before opening and again, everything is covered in hardware cloth. I am not saying we have Fort Knox (saying that is only ASKING for trouble), but I am relatively comfortable knowing they will be checked on (and I promised him a dozen fresh baked cookies upon my return as a thank you...and perhaps our first few eggs!!) and confident that he is of the "old school" philosophy where his word is his bond...still...I don't like leaving my "babies"!!
I'm sure you all know how that's like.
No more early wake up chats with my boys and greetings from my girls!!
I suppose it's not THAT bad...it's only 1 full day and then we come home...but still....
VFem- The coop looks great!! Good job!! What a great DH you have!! Do you think I will be able to borrow him to dig fence post holes around our acreage??
to you NCWormFarmer!!
hello across the way in Johnston County!!
At our place, we are surrounded by woods, so we do have a coyote problem (along with foxes & coons - but the coyote tend to keep them at bay). I can say I have never actually SEEN one in our yard, but I have heard them running out back in our wooded property, and also heard them howl. Because of that, we do not free range (not giving them a free meal from my girls who will eventually give us breakfast!!
). We also have Orpingtons - 2 Buffs, 3 Blacks and 2 Lavenders!! Once one of the ladies decides to go broody though...I plan to stuff a bunch of eggs under her and see what hatches out!!
you will learn that BHep, HT, ML, GavinandAllison, and others subliminally hypnotize you into wanting more and once you're infected with that disease (it's quite contagious) then they get you into hatching (which I understand is a far more lethal part of the disease).
Welcome again. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask (I'm new at chickens, but there are plenty on here who are such great & experienced helpers) and most importantly, once you have 10 posts, we MUST see photos of your gang...it feeds our addictions!!
