North Carolina

Well Hi Miss Lydia~~~
I need one of those thingys that shows you the "wind chill factor"..........on second thought, maybe I don't---I might not make it outside to be with the birdies.
The Silkies appear to be taking all the cold weather in stride. Of course, I did insulate the entire barn, installed paneling over the insulation, new weather tight door, put in a heater, and of course a couple of heat lamps over the youngest ones.
Yep~~~my babies are spoiled, but they're worth it

yep we had some snow on the car and a smidgen on the ground and listen that wind was wicked wasn't it. just got into low 30's here today. We live on the north side of the mtn. so we don't get alot of heating since we don't get much sun:( But wouldn't have it any other way, Sounds like your babies are very spoiled, mine have a very cozy coop but no heat unless alot colder and I'll not tell them about yours so they won't try to hitch hike down to Bat Cave and move in!

well.....don't tell the Silkies, but the heater is actually in there so "I'm" warm enough. I spend quite a bit of time in there watching them, cleaning their feet, combing out pin feathers, etc....

I'll not tell! How long have you had Silkies? Alot of times people will come on the emergency thread with sick Silkies and I have tried to encourage them to PM you[hope you don'y mind] so they can talk to someone with experience with this breed, sometimes it helps.

Got my first "pet" Silkie years ago, but got serious about breeding/raising them almost 2 years ago...that's all I raise now. We do have 4 "big girls" that lay eggs for us to eat.
I don't mind at all if you suggest someone PM me....I LOVE talking Silkies

Your avatar~~~is that one of your birds?

BTW: I've read ALL of James Herriots books.....they're the best

Thanks about recommending you, do you go to the emergency/disease thread often? seems like lately there has been quiet a few with silkie problems, someone yesterday posted about new silkie chicks with their heads upside down[don't ask me] maybe you could look over there and see what you think. If I had a specific breed, I have 1 full game hen 3 full blooded brahma hens and 4 cochin bantams and 1 cochin bantam frizzle and the rest a mix between bantams and game, with a total of 19, 17 hens and 2 roosters. 8 Muscovy ducks and my Emden goose Samson[Sammy] what I am getting at is if a breed has a sickness it;s nice to be able to talk with someone who has that specific breed, I know absolutely nothing about Silkies, do they seem to have problems other breed of chickens don't have? just reading the thread I get that idea. I am very excited about going to my first show maybe Morganton in Feb. if we're not snowed in.

Well, when it comes to disease/sickness, I know nothing about other breeds....but in most respects, a chicken is a chicken. Silkies do have problems specific to their breed I believe. Some are attributable to their impaired vision (wt. loss, failure to thrive, etc); lice seem to LOVE living in the large crests; and I believe there are more cases of wry neck (don't know why). I never go to specific forums....I usually only read those topics which I've subscribed to.

Now, Miss Lydia, if you do make it to the show in Morganton, we're gonna have to get together
