North Carolina

Just to say welcome to all the new folk, great pics to those who posted, and hi to everyone I know...... Seems funny that after a year we feel like we are "old-hands" at this....... But still learning...........

Well... I FINALLY managed to find my way to pick up some feed yesterday!! Somehow
hu.gif
I got lost and called my husband in a panic (hey, I had a crying baby in the back seat!!) and he helped me to find my way. All in all, I think the drive would have been just under 45 minutes had I not been hopelessly lost!!

Although next month, I was told to order TWO bags of feed rather than one...first I better see how long it will last!!

Sadly, I didn't get to meet up with SCM...that's probably because she had no problem finding the place!!

Egg & Buttercup - BEAUTIFUL pictures!! I now have some more chickens to add to my "want" list!!

to the new people!!

Black Widow Update: for the moment, she is in hiding, as we have not been able to locate her each time we have gone out to the coop. I have heard that they are not aggressive spiders and would prefer to be left alone - I am praying that is the case for now at least. Although I do have a question...do any of you have an issue with cockroaches in your coop?? I could have sworn I saw a few (not sure exactly what a cockroach looks like in person, so I could be wrong) in the coop. Is it because we are surrounded by woods? Does that mean our coop is too dirty?? Is it normal?? What do I do, if anything?? Will chickens EAT cockroaches?? Will a black widow?? If so, she might be my new best friend (shudders at the thought).
On a happier note...my DH said, "We have plenty of room...we NEED more chickens!!

Sadly though...most of you are handing out boys and we already have 3 boys to our 4 girls. I have enough fighting going on already. I am thinking about ordering a few from MyPetChicken (if they have older pullets), but if I do, would I have to keep them separated for a bit?!? Anyone needing to thin out their pullet collection??

I have put it off as long as possible, but today I must get cracking on the two sheet cakes I am making for this weekend. Today will be a baking and frosting making day!! Sure hope it isn't TOO hot out today!!

Ruthann,

so more birds eh? I told you the sickness spreads, now DH has it........

Don't know too much about Black Widows except avoid them.

New birds to your flock: Yes you will have to keep them seperated at first, let them be able to see each other for a few days, and then let them in together. Expect some pecking etc as they all settle their noew order in the flock

Cockroaches: I am suprised the birds are not eating them, 100% protein.

Have you tried Craigslist for some pullets? Wish I had some spare to let you have - more roo's at present than i need........

Ruthann.... bugs in the coop are normal. Food, water, poop, bedding. Bugs like that stuff. The chickens should start eating them, if they can catch them.

Enjoyed all the pictures.

Another hot one

yesterday, I put some cans & milk containers of ice in the chick cages, they had a blast pecking at the ice and had some nice COLD water as it melted. I thought I might put some treats in them next time.

Have a great day everyone !

Loved all the pictures everyone

I just have a quick question about the little cast for our pullet. It is rather stiff so when she lays down her leg has to go behind her or to the side of her. Is this okay? It just looks so uncomfortable.

Thanks

Gavin - I was afraid of Craigslist as I have heard terrible stories about diseased birds and such. My boys & girls are so beautiful & healthy (thankfully, in large part to someone's wonderful care until they were adopted out to us!!) that I am just too afraid. I will stick to waiting for one of my girls to go broody and hound HT or BHep for some unknown mystery eggs and try my hand at hatching!!

I think the roaches (if that's what they are) are too high up for them to reach. We saw them crawling around at the top of the boards up by the rafters. Again, not POSITIVE they were roaches, just looked like it to me.
lau.gif
Now I know to just knock them down when I see them!! I too am GLAD DH has the disease!! He's honestly infected with the farmer disease...he wants to fence in the whole place and get our own cows and sheep and pigs and goats and ducks (believe it or not the list goes on).
smack.gif
I said SURE...so long as I can rescue a horsey!!
hide.gif
First...we must finish ONE barn before thinking about building a larger barn and fencing in our property!! Although if we do, I vote for a BYC fence raising party at our place!! I'll supply the food, you all supply the post diggers!!
fl.gif
I'm trying!!
lau.gif

EM & HT - You are just TRYING to get me into trouble aren't you?? Here I am searching BYC for chickens and such while I am suppose to be getting a cake ready for a party!!
hide.gif
If only you two weren't so far far far away
hit.gif
Hmm...I might have to see how I could work it out with DD....if G&A was a 3 hr drive from us...I'm afraid you two might be even longer!! BOOOOO!!

Thank you all so much for easing my fears. I was thinking I was a bad bad BAD chicken owner since I saw bugs!! You all are the best!! I may sneak out later today for a cake break and take some updated pictures of my gang. I'm hoping to get the blacks in the light, as the green shine on them is absolutely stunning (although I am bias) and the lavenders are starting to fluff up a bit more!!
love.gif
Okay, now I am really heading off to go work on those darn cakes...
