So I put a little olive oil down her throat and rubbed and she stopped gasping. I have her upstairs and we are keeping an eye on her.

chi-rn! Hope you're all well and having a great weekend!

Bhep - going to the auction today? How's the temp in there w/ this heat? I need to get rid of my 2 Welsummer boys!! I put an ad on craigslist this morning (which I'm very nervous about) and was thinking of taking them to the auction. But taking 2 kids and 2 chickens to the auction by myself is a bit scary. Do you local Raleigh-ish folks know of anyone that will take roosters (even for meat) and treat them humanely??

Thanks guys!

So we had a series of nasty storms yesterday afternoon, and when I went out to check everyone, one of my Buff Orpingtons was laying in her box, not out moving around with everyone else. Upon further investigation I came to realize that she can't put any weight on one of her legs. I brought her inside to check her over and can find no physical injury, and while I was moving her leg around she showed no signs of distress. Is there anything I can do for her?

Just give her a couple of days rest away from the others and see how she it then.

Do not be shocked if she decides to sleep or rest on her back. Miss Dellie the Delaware fell out of the coop door and hurt a leg. I don't think it was broke, more like a severe sprain or bruise. I kept her inside the house a couple of weeks, then out on my sun porch. She started looking depressed and I was afraid she was losing the will to live. We started taking her out in the grass when it was nice.

Back when she was in the house I heard lots of tumbling around. When I peeked she gave me a BIG stinkeye as if to say, "Do you MIND? I'm trying to sleep here!" She was on her back, feet in the air, looking totally relaxed. When I put her in the dog kennel she had walls to brace against to flip herself over as desired. I no longer had to move her toward the food and water several times per day.

One day out in the grass, Miss Dellie decided to take a couple of steps. She had spent so long on her side or back she had to relearn how to walk. Slow creeping on her "knees" turned into regular walking. She tired very easy.

I don't recall exactly when she got hurt, but I think there was still snow on the ground. I know it was a couple of months before she was back outside. Miss Dellie is now in the run with a nice rooster and some other special girls. She doesn't hop up on the dog house roof like some of the others do, but she walks and runs normal now. She lays a pinkish egg most every day.

I've got her in her own crate in the brooder room with my little babies. They are small enough to fit the the bars of her crate, and they were all nestled together sleeping this morning. It was cute. I've got to do some moving around bt I planned on her being inside for a while

Hey Ruthann - I had a light bulb moment - you may want to check w/ BYC member heathersboers to see if she has any older girls. And she has COCHINS!!! Though they are probably just chicks. But she may have something you're interested in and is in Wilson so probably not too far. Her website is http://www.whiteoakpoultry.webs.com/.

Good luck buttercup!!!
