congrats to your hatch by the way

NC's how is everyone doing!! Not liking the cooler weather, already had to enclose the coop for winter uhhh when is spring?

Evening everyone!

I gotta brag...I made raw butter last night for the first time. It took longer than I expected but was SOOOO worth it.

Does anyone need 2 Lavendar Orpingtons? The guy that was going to buy them hasn't made plans to get them and I need the space. If I don't get any interest they are going in the freezer.

NH - it's not only chicken my calls are worse... give them fresh drinking water, clean swimming water after a good days rain. AND their reaction to clean, fresh water everywhere NOTHING!!!! they prefer stomping in the mud puddle, filtering the dirty water for drinking. They could care less their little white bodies need a bath!!!

I guess they are just being ducks...........but boy do I luuuuuuuuv them!

I used raw cream. I put it in the countertop mixer and let it do its work. After the butter clumped I drained the buttermilk off of it.....to be later used in buttermilk pie. Then I put the butter back in the mixer with ice water to "clean" the butter. I opted to not salt it. I might salt the next batch a little though.

I got the hatching eggs from buffbeauty, here on BYC. She has the salmon & just gave her black & blue to her friend. She said her friend would sell eggs from the black & blues. Time to whip out that incubator.

Bhep, I think you just need to screw that incubator permanently to your floor. At least then you won't feel guilty for not ever putting it away!!!!!!

Broody questions - Again, I'm still confused about the chicks eating the layer feed? How the heck would I avoid it? And now Esme isn't even going back into the nice comfy brooder box at night, so that's where I was keeping the chick starter but now they're not even going in there at all! Is that ok or should I move her and babies in there at night anyway???

On to fun stuff - I LOVE LOVE homemade butter! I definitely have Paula Deen Syndrome when it comes to butter - - - YUMMY! DoubleA - how was it!? And let us know how that pie turns out!

NH - fat back is sometimes also called seasoning or seasoning meat because it's often thrown in with greens or veggies or whatever to add a little flavor. Very different from lard. Good luck with your recipe!!!

Oh yeah - 6 eggs yesterday! A whole half dozen!!!

My chicks eat whatever mama feeds them... layer feed, cracked corn & scratch, horse manure.

You can't control what they eat unless they are locked up.
My inside chicks get chick starter. When they move out side....see above ^^^^^^^
