You have got the right idea, fry it like bacon to render the fat. I agree with Emeril, "pork fat rules" but my cardio guy says not. Your local grocery stores should have it.

27 degrees at 0700 this morning in the bustling metropolis of Linden this am. Broke the ice in the waterer with my finger, just a thin sheet. Went to Erwin to get a truck inspected, came back and the waterer is like an ice berg.

SCM thanks for reminding me that I have a bread machine, collecting dust in the cupboard. Time to find the instruction booklet.

Ooooh, I've made butter. I was a bit disappointed when I had such a hard time finding the right cream. Its all ultra pasterized now and that doesn't work.

I did make ricotta cheese the other night. It was AWESOME! So much better then store bought, and definitely worth my time.

I need to post it on my blog.

Good morning!!
So no one knows of where a fellow North Carolinean can get some pullets so I can have colorful eggs? do you think I'd find some at the Winston-Salem show on the 26th?

thanks...

PS: what a gorgeous fall we're having!! I hope you all enjoy this wonderful day!

Try this guy.

I am pretty sure he has blues. He always has a post in the Greensboro section of CL when he has chicks.
ETA: He is in Stokesdale.

Here is his latest CL ad for Ameracaunas. http://greensboro.craigslist.org/grd/2680077032.html I know he sells organic food and is NPIP certified. He has lots of other heritage breeds too so he may have the BCMs you want too.

I posted on the yahoo group Southern Poultry (it's the group for NC poultry owners as well as some of the neihboring states) to let Mike know I had passed his information on about the blue Ameracaunas and I got this reply from him.

"I have 6 blue Ameraucana hen/pullet left for sale & 3 splash pullets but the
rest is my breeding stock for next year & will NOT be sold! I have about 30
Ameraucana chicks & about the same amount of Buckeye pullet chicks that I'm
growing out for layer for next year! When the icubator finishes the hatch on the
22nd of Nov I'll stop until March 1st"

If you haven't gotten with him yet it is probably a good idea to do so if you want the hen now. I would love to have a blue and a splash Americauna myself, I just can't get DH to go to Stokesdale to get them.

Hey Nifty, I'm a California transplant to NC. I was born and raised in San Jose and then moved to the Central Valley to raise my kids.

Living here has its huge advantages in terms of lower cost of living, far less crime and a slower pace of living. Shopkeepers, public service employees, etc. are WAY friendlier. If you're in the hi-tech profession, you should be able to get a job in the Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham area. There are also tons of great colleges and universities here.

Disadvantages (at least for me) are difficulty finding friends, humidity, lack of cultural diversity and the fact that SERIOUS racism still exsists here.

But every place has it's good and bad, and for the most part, I'm glad I moved here. After all, living here has brought chickens into my life!

SERIOUS racism?! What part of the state do you live in?

When I saw this I had the same reaction lol. I live in jacksonville, on the edge of onslow county between richlands. We are an military town and there are people of all kinds.

Anyone live around me? I got to like the 5th page and well I'am lazy lol

OK.... BIG news here. I am FINALLY going to start building my breeder coops. I have some separated, the rest all over...free ranging. My BIL is coming Tues. to start framing.

Today me & the kids....re- arranged the tractors to make room to start working, without moving the birds outside, where they are not used to. Also wired the rafters off. Original plan was to build out in the chicken house...well since the roof panels in back blew off and the door....I am just disgusted. There are other issues popping up.

ANYway...... I will be able to build at least 20 coops in the barn they are in now, without even moving my horse out. I will be able to separate breeds & colors. My peacock coop will become the brooder room, complete with heat.

I am beyond excited.
