North Carolina

just found this thread.  I live in Hickory, NC.  Not in city limits, closer to Mountain View.  Don't have my chicks yet, but getting everything ready and they should arrive the 2nd week of February.  Can hardly wait.

Welcome! I'm new to this list too and have found it very helpful. I am about an hour and 15 mins east of you....
What kinds of chicks are you getting?

I've seen so many posts about everyone carrying water out to their chickens in this freezing weather. Doesn't anyone use heated waterers???? I think they are totally wonderful. We have them for the horses, dogs and chickens! It sure would save ya'll a lot of work and hurt...tractor Supply sells them and they are also on eBay! You just plug them in and keep them filled :)

Got to have electricity in the buildings to use them, though. Um...and you still have to provide water. If my hoses are frozen, that means I carry it.

Worked yesterday and though my babies were neglected they still gave me 4 eggs! They are such troopers. Went out...well I slid out and topped off feeders. Only one waterer is out in the open and was frozen, had to bring it in the house and run hot water over it. Was planning to get the stuff to make water heater this weekend, but I am staying put. My road coming home last night was solid ice and it is north facing so it will be frozen until spring! I only go out to work or the appointments. One of my BO's has laid already this morning, sweet babies!
Everyone stay safe, poor DH is working EMS today and I just heard the ambulance go out. They HAVE to go no matter what the weather or where the call.
I have a fireplace screensaver, think I will huddle around it while doing school work! Need to run, thinking warm thoughts!

No ideas from me. I have an extension to the back chicken house, as it's right next to the barn. The front house is much farther. I won't run extension cords over the ground, as I don't want things...like my pups...chewing on them. And that still wouldn't keep me from carrying warm water out.

Any suggestions about running electricity?  I have 2 chicken tractors, guess I will just have to run extension cords.  We have an outlet out on the fence for electric (used it til I found a dead bird...no more electric fence!)  I can plug into.
