I havent been getting any eggs from my girls for about a month now.

The Serama's are still laying although they have slowed some. I expect them to pick back up again in a few weeks as it warms up. I have been wracking my brains as to a breeder pen set up. I need to get building if i'm going to have it ready by spring. I have a large area in the back of the horse pasture that I think Im going to fence off in 12x12 sections and build a coop in each pen. My concern though is I have problems with the juvenile hawks every spring to mid summer as they hatch they all take a few good passes at my chickens till they fly away to find their own territory. The adult resident hawks don't bother my chickens any more since the female hawk got herself caught on my electric fence and zapped herself toasty. (she survived because I knocked her off the fence and sent her away with animal control...the idiot animal control rehabed her and brought her back to turn her loose!) The male hawk tangled with one of my big FBCM roosters on two occasions and both times had his butt handed to him

soooo.......neither of the adult hawks have bothered my chickens since then and its been over a year.

On another note. I am looking for a female gold laced or silver lace or one of both sebrights. There was a fellow in Sanford that had some on CL but both times I called him to go get some her never answered and now his add is gone.

Well it sounds like I should be thanking my lucky stars that all of my girls have been laying. I only have 5 right now though. :p
I do have 2 tiny Roos that need to find a home though. My good ole Bellabob wants to try and go after them so I have to keep them separated from everybody else. :(

Don't forget that dang Agricultural Census that plagues me every five years is due on the fourth, or they come looking for you!

What's an agricultural census?? :idunno
Every five years the Ag dept sends out a census on agricultural practices. I hate it. Then each year there's another form to fill out on what you had, how many, what you sold and for how much, and all that fun stuff, again. We got on their farm list when I had registered dairy goats some years back and I don't think I'll ever get off of it. Never register your livestock unless you want the government breathing down your neck!

Have some more sad news to report. I lost one of my part Ameraucana/Polish hens Sunday morning. She laid her first egg on Sat. I didn't think it was as cold as it has been and everybody survived the worst days. I brought her in and put her in front of the heater because I heard noises coming from her but she didn't make it. When I checked her over her vent looked like she was trying to lay. I wonder if it was to cold for her to pass her egg? Maybe her body temp. was too low? All I know is I just hate it and blame myself for not keeping them warmer. The weather was too bad to get the coop together, but her twin and the OEG bantam are in there now and plastic covering the run. Now I don't know if I should get the little 3 month olds or not. Will they be warm enough? I can't handle any more loses right now. I have lost 8 in 5 months time.

Just finish reading all the back post. Mary and Meg sorry about your lost and Wild hope something works out for you. Shame some of us are spreaded so far apart from each other. I don't think anybody is close to me. I have a small bag of chick starter that I wish I could cram in this computer. I needed grower finisher and they were out so I bought that, now I probably won't use it because they will be too old before I get them.
