Thank you to the special BYC'er who left a generous bag of feed on my doorstep yesterday. And to another angel of a BYC'er who is helping me get some more feed. :hugs :bow

Went to the store today and got a couple loafs of old bread. And a couple bags of old greens :/ the chickens acted like the greens were punishment :idunno they love spinach and cabbage but collards NOooooooo! Checked with the feed store for 'fine' feed, no luck. And torn or damaged bags, No luck either. My feed store said that any damaged bags get taken by the employees, who almost all have farms. But I'm looking up, and trying to keep happy and positive.

Wow! I've gotten 5 different batches of shipped eggs and hatched 4 out of 5 Isbars, 3 out of 4 BLRWs, 4 out of 6 BCMs, 6 out of 7 Rhodebars and 6 out of 7 Norwegian Jaerhorns. I guess I have had pretty good luck with shipped eggs! I have basically gotten chicks for every egg I paid for, thank goodness. Most folks sent me an extra so I came out ok. Just candled my shipped Blue Ameracauna eggs and Mille fleur d'uccles and all are fertile and developing....won't know how many will hatch for a few more weeks.... I didn't realize it was normal to only have a 50% hatch rate with shipped eggs. It must just be beginner's luck! LOL! I better stop while I'm ahead :)

Angela,
Great to see you on here, I've enjoyed seeing your posts and had to say congrats on your hatches so far this year! You sure are ambitious so early! Anyway, I am Ashley, you bought guinea keets from me last year (Liberty, NC). How are your guineas? And horses and dogs, etc.

Good morning folks

2strayroos - sorry about your hen. I think after a year or so of chicken keeping, everyone has lost a chicken and doesn't know why. It seems like they can be totally fine when you look at them, do a 360 spin and the chicken dies

I know of people who feed chick starter till the chicks start laying eggs so your bag will work with them being 3 months old. I am waiting for my newest polish projects to start laying to see if they lay blue eggs

Wild - so glad that someone is close enough to help you out with a feed bag and all, what great people!

Good Morning Chickeners!! I heard the BEST sound this morning (okay second best) when I sent my hubby off to work. One of my 2 roosters was announcing to the world that it was morning!!
love.gif
I have MISSED hearing that sound so much, I hope he keeps it up. I think it is my BSL Rooster - as I saw him "practicing" a few times during the day out in the yard. Now if only he would do it throughout the day... (I had to say second best, because at this point I think I might actually CRY if I heard the egg song from one of my girls - when that happens it will be the BESTEST [not a real word, but deal with it..hehe] sound ever!!).

Yesterday was absolutely beautiful!! I went into spring cleaning mode and did a deep clean in several rooms while doing laundry (no diapers) and hanging it all on the line!! The bad news...the taste of 70 degree weather just made me want it even more!! LOL BRING ON SPRING - wait... my greenhouse isn't ready and neither is my garden...I guess it can hold off for a TAD bit longer!! LOL

Have a great day everyone!!

I think my hens need some therapy or something. They've been laying since July or August and I've NEVER heard the 'egg song'. I've sat out there in the coop for hours (sipping coffee and tossing treats) and I've seen one go in the coop, stay a while and come back out - no song. I'd go check and there would be a beautiful, warm little miracle in the nest - but no song. I've checked the nest first thing in the morning, then spent several hours working in the yard and then checked the nest box in the afternoon - 3 eggs - no song. I've actually been in the coop cleaning with one of the girls sitting in the nest - they get up, walk over to see what I'm doing and go outside - leaving an egg - but no song......

You can go by your local grocery stores and ask for old produce. I ask every once in a while and mine always give me a HUGE generous box of stuff. Farmer's markets are also good places for bruised veggies. I had more pumpkins than you can could imagine. My birds loved it!

YAY glad he is crowing and Tyrone is doing his job. BTW, I think you need to lock those girls up for a week or so and force some laying INSIDE the coop. They have to be laying somewhere.

Hey Ashley! Thank you for the welcome :) All is well over in Belews Creek. Busy hatching in January because graduate school starts back next week! Once that starts, I will have my nose in the books til May. Won't have as much time to dote on the eggs and incubators.

I definitely want more guineas this year. I'm watching closely for mine to lay but I think its a bit early. Let me know when you have some keets available. I don't think the 15 that we have left will be able to keep up with the ticks. I need at least 30 to cover the property.

Let me know if you are coming to the poultry show in Winston Salem at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds - I think I'm going to go to it.
