I am hoping that since the NC winters are only about 2 - 3 months long we won't have a long spell of non-production

I have a chick that's beak is not line up right. Anyone see that before?

It will be a cross beak. Most will live just fine with special care. My profile picture is of mine. He was 5 yrs old when I lost him due to a bad chicken sitter. now most first year layers will lay through the first winter. But after that they do take a break while molting, some longer than others. Light will help them keep laying. But it uses the hens up faster, because like women they are born with all the eggs they will ever lay. Now as a hen ages, they slow up on the eggs. But I had a silkie who lived till 14 but quite laying at 10 years old, I also had a lakenvelder live to 11 yrs old and quite laying at 10. The lakenvelder laid all of 5 eggs the last year she laid but I was happy that she was still walking by than

Most hens still lay decent at 3 or 4 years but seem to take a little longer to start up after a molt. If you do process them you need to have point of lay hens or starting to lay hens to take their place when you do them if you want to keep getting eggs. Which means doing chicks or buying pol hens and feeding two sets of birds for a little bit. Or like I do, I raise some chicks and put them with the rest when the time comes, as chickens just die for no reason at all!! So I haven't done in a hen just excess young males that I don't get sold. Hope this helps

You can use me! There are lots of disorders under the MDA umbrella, including the one that put me in the leg brace and the forearm crutches (or dog). I'm glad I was a supporter of them before I became one of Jerry's Kids!

I have thought about checking out drakes the swaps in e-city can be a hit and miss sometimes lol. I will have my eyes and ears open. I know there are swaps on the 9th in town. My friend has two beautiful toms in need of some hens. I am on the hunt for silkies, cochin bantams and frizzles. I might end up leaving the swap with something else. Like my recent buy of 6 Speckled Sussex from TSC. They sure don't keep chicks in stock there very long. I must have bought them right on time, because the next day every single chick was gone. Just a bunch of cute ducks left. Anyways keeping my fingers crossed I can find my friend some turkeys.

Oh, since I mentioned dog, I am happy to report that Jake is doing much better on the adaquan injections. He was out playing with a horse ball yesterday, chasing it all over the front yard, pouncing and throwing it. He hasn't played like that in months! I fully expect the vet to return him to work next week and not make me retire him! (Cross your fingers!)

it more in-likely will, but that thread and some of us here can help you with it

you will have to keep the beak trimmed some to help it eat, I know some try not to trim, but end up doing it or losing the bird
