I nearly felt like killing my dog last night. After work (8 pm) I went out to check on my chickens and one of them had some how managed to get out of the pen and came running up to me. I saw her just as the dog did and I spent the next five minutes fighting with him over the dog. Fortunately, my hen ended up with no injuries despite being carried off TWICE! This is the same hen that got loose mysteriously back before Christmas. I'm just glad that I was able to save her (AGAIN) but now I'm thinking of renaming her "Houdini" I went around the pen three times trying to figure out how she got out. I am surprised at how friendly she is (when a dog isn't trying to eat her) considering the set up of the pen and all. Such a sweet girl.

Oh, here is a head scratcher though, out of my 12 chickens, all but three have recently begun to sleep UNDER the chicken coop (sits up on cinder blocks attached to the pen with chicken wire around it and the trampoline that makes up the run) instead of sleeping INSIDE it. Means I have to get on my hands and knees when looking for eggs. Has anyone else had their chickens do this instead of sleeping in roosts? I would think that they'd want to stay up off of the ground. Under the trampoline (15 foot diameter) we also have roosts built under there which they use during the day so there is plenty of roosts so this one has me stumped.

Kind of disappointed.... Came out to coop this morning and all the chickens are sitting on the floor no one up on the roost I installed yesterday.... bummer! Maybe tonight... and pop door been open for over an hour and no one has come out.

Crazy chickens!

I am looking for some POL pullets that are excellent layers (leghorns, sex links, RIR, etc). If anyone has any near the Triad area, please let me know - I will also be at the poultry show the end of this month in Winston Salem.....

Also looking for olive egger pullets for sale.

Thanks so much!

Jd is looking for Barred Rock POL or near to it. And TarHeelBirdie is looking, too.

I'll pass if JD is still interested - found out the friend that we are finding birds for is being too cheap....he doesn't know the value of grown-out pullets, and I am not willing to insult any of my BYC buddies just to get him cheap birds. I am going to let him find his own unless I just run across some by chance. Thanks for remembering me, Hollowoak.

I have 9 eggs from my Swedish Flower Hens ready for the incubator, if anyone is interested. I can't put them in mine because they would need to go into lockdown during Easter weekend and I will be out of town. PM me if you are interested or know someone who is!

I have about 10. How many is your friend looking for?

Last time that happened to me, it was a predator that was coming by at night. I ended up trapping the critter and relocating him. a couple of nights later the girls were back on their roost.
Not sure if that is your problem, but something is making them hide...
