That might work out for me. Are you thinking of selling the eggs? I am interested in both when you do

I think I will be getting an incubator for my birthday from my husband! Oh how many paints do you think you will have?

Good morning everyone!!

I am LOVING this weather!! Sorry about the rain, apparently the weather heard me tell Beth I had plans to do diapers today - thus the rain. <sigh> It NEVER fails!! LOL

Anyway, this warmer weather - I'm getting TWO eggs a day now. I have a total of 5 girls that should/could be laying - my BSL, I'm not quite sure if she's at POL or not, if she isn't, I have 4 layers and getting 2 eggs a day - not a bad start since 1/2 of these are all "seasoned" layers and the other 1/2 are brand new! I am going to separate my older 2 girls to see if they are laying at all - if not, we're having a processing party this weekend (DH wants me to process one anyway because she's white and he thinks she stands out too much being the only white one...I say she's a survivor - she's managed to avoid coyotes, hawks, and opossums....pretty smart if you ask me!!) - I have some teenage boys that NEED to be promoted to freezer camp.

Funny chicken story: I have one TINY rooster - I mean this guy is 1/3 the size of his brothers and we all were convinced on size (he IS a mutt, but still part orpington) and tail feathers that he was a girl...well he has been TERRORIZING the girls. He keeps trying to "do his thing" but...well the girls are so much bigger then he is that after a moment or two of a struggle, they throw him off, chase him, pull out his feathers and this little stinker isn't smart AT ALL. He gets "right back on" and tries again...unsuccessfully!!

Needless to say, he's going to get separated as well until he gets big enough for freezer camp - IF he ever gets big enough!!

I hope you all have a great day!!

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

Yay for a bit of rain; we've been sooooooooo dry!

The rain will make it easier to keep the chickens close in to their new coop, which is why I needed to get the move all done yesterday.

On the other hand, I had planned to visit Beth today, and....I'm not coming, Beth! I'm not tracking mud into your house. We'll try for Thursday' if it still works for you.

Enjoy your day!

NH... If you keep eating all your hens....you will never have any eggs.
idunno.gif
And the young pullets are 2-3 months from laying yet. They only hatched on / around Nov 7th.

I have a hen here... at LEAST 6 yrs old and she STILL lays.

Hey, I am fighting the DH on this one. My mama Maran has been a good hen - and I'm not sure she's not laying!! I have a blue sex link pullet that is the same age (or a few weeks younger) then "No Name" rooster (BSL) and she was the one I was referring to as not being quite ready. She's still a lot smaller than the other pullets that are at POL (not to mention the teenagers leave her alone completely...she's also just SLIGHTLY larger than the 12 youngsters I have, which is another reason I think she is young) so I am assuming she isn't "ready" yet (ack...you know what they say about assumptions though!). That would give me 4 layers, 2 eggs a day, and since they are just starting up again, I would say I am right on track - that ALL the girls are laying. IF she's laying, DH won't touch her, if not, he just doesn't want to feed the girls if they aren't going to produce. The only exception he made were for the ones we designated as our brooders (RIP Cochins) - they were allowed to stay on and eat for free so long as they were willing to hatch & raise babies!! LOL. I ONLY plan on cutting down on the number of roosters - we currently have the 2 big boys, 2 LARGE buff teenagers and 1 runty teenager plus one still questionable chicken...this is the buff/splash (I can't remember what we called it...the one that we WANTED to catch and look at but overheard us and hid?!?). We're definitely processing the 2 buff teenagers....that's IT for now. However, that would still leave us with 3 possibly 4 roosters and only 5 hens (NOT counting the 12 young girls)...so we will have to process the other rooster (or 2) at a later time...when they get some weight on them. They are TINY!! LOL. I don't know what you do, but I think you put whiskey or something in their water to get your girls to lay like firecrackers!!
