most States before they really have any say so, they must be 14 to 16 years of age. (check your State if not here) Before that, The kids can say all they want, just the Judge rules thinking they know what's best for the kids... No matter what is really best for the kids.

Good luck if they are younger...

I have a question for all of you "veteran" BYCers. If you have something to sell and you only want to post locally, do you post here, or on the BST threads? Just curious, I have some chicks to find homes for and wasn't sure where to post them. I didn't know if I should post them in the other thread because I won't ship or what. So any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah.. You need to put it in the BST section. It is frown upon to advertise here...but mention you have some chicks and to PM for interest works.

Hunting dogs are often harder to teach chicken manners to. Sometimes impossible. They have been bred to have a high prey drive, albeit a controllable one. But without the control, they can become the worst around livestock. Same for untrained herding dogs. Kinda hard on a dog to ask it to go against its bred-in instincts. Some can do it. Some can't. The ones that are out of lines that have been pet or show longer rather than hunting dogs have the best chance.
I have a hunting dog, a Walker Hound. I found her on the side of the road, someone threw her away. She's the best chicken guard, never took a second look at the chickens. I also had a lab who was a trained field hunter. She went after the chickens once, but she was so well trained (with a shock collar) that as soon as I said "no" she snapped right back around and heeled. Found her on the side of the road too.

I would get a shock collar. My pitt bull killed about 8 chickens the first day I brought him home from the humane society. A couple of days with the shock collar and he wouldn't even look at a chicken. And the shock is not a terrible one, I have felt it and I have actually owned horse fencing that was worse

Again, I didn't say hunting dogs weren't teachable. I said they were "often harder to teach" because of what they were bred for. And they are. But there will be lots of examples of dogs that a) didn't need training or b) trained quickly or c) whatever else.
