North Carolina

Hey Nifty, I'm a California transplant to NC.  I was born and raised in San Jose and then moved to the Central Valley to raise my kids.

Living here has its huge advantages in terms of lower cost of living, far less crime and a slower pace of living.  Shopkeepers, public service employees, etc. are WAY friendlier.  If you're in the hi-tech profession, you should be able to get a job in the Charlotte or Raleigh-Durham area. There are also tons of great colleges and universities here.

Disadvantages (at least for me) are difficulty finding friends, humidity, lack of cultural diversity and the fact that SERIOUS racism still exsists here.

But every place has it's good and bad, and for the most part, I'm glad I moved here.  After all, living here has brought chickens into my life! /img/smilies/wink.png

What part of the state do you live in? As far as cultural diversity, there's a ton of it, especially in the mountains:) There are many types of crafts, folklore, music, and other traditions that are unique to NC. You should check out the mountains if you haven't yet. The whole state is full of culturally diverse events, people, etc., but the mountains are my fav:) As far as racism, it still exists(as it does everywhere) but it definitely is not that prominent. One may imply that there is serious racism because of all the rebel flags flying in people's yards. Most people just do this to let people know they're southern and proud of it, not to show they believe in slavery or hate blacks. Anyways, glad to hear you chose the best state to live in!!!!

Good Monday Morning everyone!!

WELCOME to all the new folks!! I hope you enjoy your stay with us...there are LOTS of really friendly & helpful enablers ... err - I mean people on here!

Got rid of one of our roosters last night...the "pretty" Cochin Splash x Buff Orpington little guy...he is now alpha male to 4 pretty hens (well, he will be once his quarantine is over with!!) I am happy to be rid of another ROOSTER - it's one I don't have to feed nor process, so it's all good. The gal fell in love with Cadbury (said "wow he's big)...I had to keep an eye on her to make sure he stayed with us...haha...JK
Who else has planting fever? I want to get my garden planted and growing...DH and I have been working long hours to get the garden set up and I am so unfamiliar with NC weather, I don't know when to plant what. LOL. Since you're suppose to plant most weeks after the last possible frost...WHEN have we had frost lately?!? LOL...yes, I am THAT anxious! My tomato sprouts are doing SO well compared to how they did last year, I am hopeful. Maybe, just MAYBE my black thumb is turning slightly green?!?

On a family note...today is THE day we take the youngest to the specialist at Duke for her consultation/testing with the geneticist...we're in for a LONG LONG day. Best part: DH is home with me to help, AND I scheduled a shopping play date with a friend...so regardless of the outcome...it's a good day!

I hope you all have a wonderful day!!
I have seedlings for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, butter beans, pintos, peas and onions to go out in April, and broccoli and cauliflower gets transplanted out in the garden this week!
