:ya   Someone in my neck of the "woods"  WOO HOO!!  HELLO from one who is just off of 39 (between Middlesex & Selma - although our address is in Middlesex)!!  Welcome to BYC!!

I am a bit bias when I say this, but you have found the BEST forum on BYC...everyone here has been SO amazing to me as I started out on the whole chicken raising experience!  I have learned a LOT (still so much to learn) - and they are always so patient with my "newbie" questions (and I've had chickens for almost 2 years now!!)!!  I have very limited experience with babies, so I will let those that are "seasoned" help you!!  :D   Welcome aboard!!

Hello - I'm on the Northern side of Hwy 39 in between Middlesex and Bunn, but I have a Zebulon address.

We bought our first chicks !

Predator took two Silkie hens from the tractor last night. It was latched but whatever it was broke the hook. Didn't alert me or the dog, which is strange because one of those hens was brooding eggs and would not have gone quietly. Only a few feathers around the tractor, no tracks that I can see. I am bawling because not only are those eggs ruined, but she was my best and favorite silkie. The other was a teenage pullet with a snaggletooth beak which made her very endearing. Today just is NOT my day.

quick question: If I want to do lf and bantams in the incubator together do I just start the lf eggs and add the bantam eggs 2 days later?

set them together... they all take 21 days. SOMETIMEs a bantam chick may hatch 12-24 hours before the rest but that is fine... KEEP THE LID CLOSED during hatching. Remember the chicks can live off their yoke sac for 3 days.

Hey I asked on another forum, about chickens and poisonous spiders, we have brown recluse and tons of black widow spiders. Will these hurt the chickens, or will the chickens eat them? Seems like a dumb question (and noone responded to it on the other post)

The chickens should eat them just fine. I suspect one of mine got bitten once- she was woozy and 'off' for about a day and then was fine. Fwiw. :)

Ok, I have a feed question.
I feed my flock layena and they free range most of the day. I feed my chicks (8 weeks old now) chick feed. I will be integrating them into the flock soon. Since they are too young for layena feed, what do I do? Do I switch back to flock feed or will they be ok on the layena?

Extra protein is fine for older birds. Make sure the olders have access to oyster shell so they get the calcium they need.
