NH, then we'll have to set up a time to visit! I don't know that my "set-up" is worth getting green over. I'm not even sure it rates being called a "set-up"! It's a work in progress, as is everyone's place. It's just "home"!

WHAT !!!!! You have an AWESOME set up !!!!

What out NH has Amnesia..she may leave with birds in her diaper bag ..

NH.....try the goat!!!!
if you can't deal with a goat then you won't
want a cow. a goat will do everything a cow
will do and maybe even less but it's a much
smaller scale than a cow.......whatever a goat
does a cow will do 10 times bigger........a trial
run is a great idea...........saves the cost of
something you may NOT really want to do
once you try it out.

Busymadre..........see if you can find a bird
vet near you and have them show you
how to trim the beak so you are comfy
with doing it.

hope everyone had a grand day

The broodiness is getting started this year. Scrunchy, frizzle bantam cochin mix, has been full broody in an empty nest for several weeks. She is tossed out several times a day, but she is unbreakable. I just want to make sure she is eating well.

Pigie, white bantam cochin, is not clucking, but is in a constant state of readiness. I have to collect any eggs that are in that house often or she will claim them. Pigie is a proven setter and a great mother. Later she will go broody on an empty nest for the summer.

Today Dumpling, mottled d'Uccle, was talking away when a big hen walked past her. Dumpling immediately fuzzed up, squealed, and then started that rythmic clucking. She is still laying and she was back to normal at supper time(6pm), so it should be at least a week away before she is nest bond for the summer.

The big problem is that I have no intentions of raising any bantams this year, just like last year. I have too many bantam hens that are unbreakable broodies. I am hoping Daisy, LF buff Orp, goes broody about the time of Chickenstock. I want to find some dark eggs for her to set on and raise me some layers from.

Sometimes you can find both cheaper at your local feed or hardware store, the smaller ones who want to get rid of their stock.  I would call TSC and your Southern States store, (ours here is Yoders) and check their prices compared to Lowe's and Home depot. TSC did have their on sale due to Chick days but I am not sure if that sale is going on still..
Good luck....

Hey thanks! I will do that, there are a few local places and a TSC nearby.

NH, no real timeline. She is for sale but I haven't gotten any bites yet. If you aren't interested I'll take her to Beth for brush clearing. :)

How much work and money would it be to rent the goat for brush clearing? We have some really brushy woods that need help....just haven't a clue how much work a goat is....

I will be buying my supplies/materials for the coop and run in the next few days.
Need to know if there is a cheaper resource for hardware cloth and poultry netting than Lowe's or Home Depot. Was $54 for 50ftx48in roll of hardware cloth, and $37ish for the 1in poultry netting, 48"x50ft.
Nurse,
we have a Southern States here in Statesville and they have the 1 inch chicken wire. Both 5 and 6 foot by 150 foot are $120. TSC has a roll of 5 foot by 50 feet for around $50. Southern States also has 4ft by 150 ft for around $70. I think they also have 1/2 inch harware wire for about $50 for a50 foot roll I think. I think thats what they were the other week. Hope this helps.

Hey Guys, Who up here breeds and sells bantam cochin birds or eggs? If so what kind? I am on the hunt to stock my new pen

Yes that helps, I need to look up Southern States and see if there is one nearby.

What is best to put on top of the run to hawk-proof it? I want to eventually use sun-tuf corrugated panels, but need to conserve $$ right now, since we are buying the house soon.
