North Carolina

Good morning everyone!!! I'm pretty new to this whole backyard chicken raising and unfortunately we are renting so I can't have as many as I would like, and being on here makes me want so many more!!! But my question for all of you is I'm currently living in carteret county NC and was wondering if there are any shows around here? 2nd question was what are some signs if any that a chick may start laying? With in a couple of weeks here my mixed RIR will be 18-19 weeks.

Good Morning Everyone!

HollowOak, SO sorry about Bob!

After finding out that something (skunk??) was getting into our chicken coop at night and eating the duck eggs (ducks were cooped in with the chickens), we spent ALL day yesterday fixing up another stall in the barn for the ducks to go in. We put chicken wire over any and all small hole or opening, fixed the door so it goes all the way to the floor, and repaired the wood wall separating the new duck "coop" from the adjoining stall. ALL that just to find out the little creature climbed the fence enclosing the field behind the back half of the barn (where it opens to the duck pond), climbed into the stall adjoining the duck "coop", dug a hole under the wall, and ate the duck eggs! Now we're going to have to bury some chicken wire under the wall, or figure something else out.

Hope y'all have a great day!

Yesterday a friend of mine sent a very nice lady my way, with a pet she could no longer care for. As she got out of the car, leash in hand, I thought 'O no, I can't not take another dog' (as I seem to be ppopular with strays and unwanted dogs). The woman came around the car and lo and behold...... meet Willa

Isn't she just the cutest thing?!?

Thanks Meg! I think I made dad jealous of my raspberry plants! He brought me some 3 year old blueberry plants so we got them put in the ground and I started some giant sunflowers to make a pretty privacy fence between my house and the annoying neighbor. Loaded the incubator again.....lots and lots of brahma chicks are coming out!!!!! and only 6 weeks left before mini-me is supposed to make his appearance!!! Happy monday everyone!

Good Monday Morning everyone!! BEAUTIFUL weather today - almost makes me wish I had stuff to do outside!!

ALMOST.

Having a ROUGH morning, chickens and ducks are doing well - DH is thinking about adding more chickens & maybe even turkeys this spring so we can stock the freezer this fall...I know NOTHING about raising turkeys for processing (do they process the same as chickens too??) so if anyone wants to chime in and offer some advice/direction, PLEASE DO!! Then I can tell hubby if it's a good or BAD idea. LOL. It would be nice NOT to have to order our turkeys and figure out what to do with them once we get them...remember my 22lb turkey fiasco?!? 2 adults and a baby and a 22lb turkey for Thanksgiving...

If we raised them ourselves, we could keep them to a more "reasonable" size, right?? Say 12lbs?? Would they eat the same as chickens too?? Okay, enough questions from me (for now). LOL

Have a great day everyone!!

She is blowing her coat big time, I think spring is on the way.
Best horse I've ever been over fences on. The chiropractor was here the other day to do her adjustment and she asked me how often she was being ridden and I said "not much". Blades (my chiro) then asked me if I was retiring her and my trainer and I both burst out laughing. She's just getting started.

I guess it runs in the family, her mother is 29 this year and we just got done having an argument about whether she was going to do a simple leg yield, like I wanted her to do, or whether we were going to do half pass at the hand-gallop like she wanted to do. So glad I chose Arabians, they're like little energizer bunnies.

I feel like the hair will never stop coming, though. They just keep shedding and shedding.
We've got 13 doing this right now! The birds are just going nuts lining their nests with soft horse hair :) If we could sell this stuff, we would be rich!

We, on the other hand, feel like we have horse hair in every possible part of our being. Do the white areas shed more or is it just our imagination!? Even using the vacuum on them, I end up covered with hair!

Well, over the weekend I blocked off the underside if the coop with some bricks to keep my hens from going under there and much to my dismay I had a hen break her neck trying to get past them. I have told a neighbor that if he wanted to, he could process the extra roos himself and take them. Poor girls. Just too many boys around to be comfortable.
