North Carolina

Hello Everyone I am new to the NC thread. I am from Fuquay-Varina and love all the different breeds of chickens I have. Huge enthusiast of them and love to talk about them...lol

Welcome! What breeds do you have?

Sitting up late with a gun(pellet gun wish I had a real one) tonight, just got word that my neighbor about 2 Miles up the mountian, had her whole flock... 103 birds total: guineas, chickens, peafowl, geese and turkeys....killed by 4 juvi cougar males.

I don't think my pellet gun will deter a cougar, gonna go ask if I can borrow a friends guns. She told the cougars were caught on her game cam so she is gonna send me pics, she said by the size of them they aren't but 6 months to a year.

OH no!!! They got all the birds?? How terrifying! Are the wildlife people doing anything??

Thank you for this info!  Do I need to place a nest box down on the ground level for them?  How high up can I make it for them to still get into it?  I just won't expect any eggs from them for at least a few more months then.  They sure are adorable little things - I just love them.

My nest boxes are ground level. As often as they go broody its a good idea especially if they will be raising the chicks. The bitties can move in and out. I wouldn't make them to high off the ground.

Also mine never brood in it. They just sit in the shavings. When one goes another will join shortly. I have anywhere from 2-4 on a clutch. They will raise the chicks and go broody again. I have 7 girls. Two just hatched chicks. Then all 4 in a breeding pen went broody. I only have 1 girl walking around. She never has been broody and is 10 months old

Welcome aboard, Well you have a little bit of everything! I bet you cant name all your chickens ten times fast. lol

Does my pullet have wry neck? She is is about 7 weeks old, and I have noticed that when she is standing at ease, she appears to be looking straight at the ground. If she looks "up" at something, she seems to not be able to turn her beak upward as much as others. It's not terribly noticeable, but I can tell. She is one of my SFH and I love her coloring, but I will need to make a decision about including her in my breeding program or not, due to this issue. Any thoughts?
