Good Morning Happy Chicken people!! I am excited to share with you Mama and 6/7 of her babies (I took this photo before seeing the 7th one...and well, it's been a challenge getting all 7 in a photo together. LOL). If we are correct, I had a 100% hatch rate on SFH (4/4) a 50% on EO (2/4, 1 died) and a 50% on SB...since I am not a math person, I'll say I like those odds and give myself a 70% hatch rate under a first time broody mama...I'd say she did a good job! Now...to buy a SMALL incubator or go with a silkie?? DH wants to have a constant supply of meat birds (heritage breed) - so if we do that, we'd need a pair to at least get eggs from - oh did I mention he's already looking into another coop just for the meat birds? Looks like the old coop out back is going to be disassembled and moved up on the concrete slab and then see what can be done to salvage it for the meaties!

Who infected my DH with the chicken bug? I thought HE would be immune to the chicken disease!! LOL

Have a great day everyone!!

Good morning everyone!

April 17th I got some mail order pullets from a reputable hatchery, one of which was a cuckoo maran pullet.
They're about 3 weeks old and while I have never had a cuckoo maran before and there isn't a second for comparison, but I think I was actually sent a cockeral.
This is based on the head pattern, the light and defined bar pattern on the wings, and the lack of tail feathers at this age.
Any input before getting rid of it?
I way over bought on chicks this year I need to downsize!

He kept flapping his wings, so it looks muddled there, but it is mostly white, very defined bar pattern. Picture isn't really helping here, making it look worse. Didn't notice until I uploaded sorry!

Barely any tail feathers, just starting! Different breeds, but my americaunas and welsummers from the same day hatch that were sexed pullets have like inch long tail feathers.

When I got up this morning...late, as is the way it's supposed to be the first week of no classes....Levi presented me with a chicken he'd killed yesterday. We have fence work to do. On the other hand, there were a dozen of the birds out when I came home at dusk yesterday and he wasn't bothering them, so that's a plus. One-and-stop beats the heck out of play-them-all-to-death-one-at-a-time. Still, fencing and puppy training will follow. He got a pullet, but it was one of the many extra hatchery Buff Orpingtons, so it could have been worse.

Sexing chicks is only 98% reliable. Maybe you're in the 2% that got it wrong.

A friend and I are starting a 4-H club in Carteret County for any of you who are interested. We will focus on horses, poultry and organic gardening. I have decided to offer my chickens up as 4-H projects for kids who can't keep chickens. They can come one or two times a week and take care of that chicken and we'll work on showmanship or production, whatever the interest is. I am willing to register them in the Cape Fear Poultry Association so that they can take their project bird to the December show. PM me if interested. 4-H is for kids 4-18.
