Looks good Dutch. Can some of your neighbors help. Maybe if they help they'll catch the chicken fever and you guys could help each other while the spouses are deployed. Just a thought. Tell your husband that we all thank him for his service. I retired in 2008 from the Army National Guard. It's tough on the families while they're gone.

I have a chick(en) that has some blood by her comb. I am thinking she got it hooked on the chicken wire somehow. They sometimes seem to think the grass is greener on the other side and want to peck the ground through the thicken wire. Anyone else have this happen ever?

I am not sure what else could have happened. I am hoping that since it is on top of her head the others will leave it alone (and if not, she will let them know to).

Should I wipe it off and try to investigate more or just leave it?

So I spent my morning framing out a new chicken coop! Not too bad for a city girl that almost failed shop class!!! I have a frame for the roof, but need another pair of hands to get them installed. It was no joke building this thing without help or blue prints. Made me feel productive though, hope the chickens like it!
Has the makings of a nice coop!

Back from dashing to Georgia to watch my niece graduate. Down and back in a day, with a bit of family in the middle.

On the hen with the slight head wound, I'd put BluKote on it. The red of blood attracts them to pick at her...and she'll let them, oddly enough! BluKote hides the red. They don't pick at blue things.

I don't ever ignore blood, because in the worst case scenario, the others will peck at the bloody spot. I would take the hen out and put her by herself until she heals up.

Yes I agree with the Blukote, It works!!

Quote: Remember Chickens are meat eaters, Red gets them in the eating/pecking mode BIG time! Just drop a bit of raw hamburger in a pen and see what happens.

Scott (who don't in a pen with open cuts anywhere)

If you take her out she will likely get picked on when she is put back in. Blue Kote is the best option to keep her with her flock and from getting picked at again.

Change of plans! I'll be at WCA tomorrow. I'm bringing saddles for those that want to look at them!
