found a 7 foot long black rat snake in my broody's box today
sad.png
he swallowed 4 eggs before I found him. had a fun time teaching the neighboring childern that i babysit about them though, teaching them how to tell the difference between a venomus snake and a harmless one. and even though I was mad at this snake, I released him, cause I'd rather deal with him than a rat. one kid couldn't believe I held it. not the best pic but the only one I could get.

ETA: if you zoom in or look closely the buldge behind the head is an egg.

That's a big snake!!!
We just found our first snake in our yard here the other day, but it was a baby so only about 2 ft long.
Googled it and it was a Pine Snake, which I later found out falls into the "chicken snake" category that they will come take your eggs.
I didn't realize they could climb (guess I should have, how else would they get up in trees!)
What did you do with it?
I just threw mine out in the front yard since I'm not one for killing anything. My husband thinks its just going to come back.
I'm just hoping it doesn't go after my chicks once they're out there!

my neighbor took it to the creek on their property. Its about 10-12 acres away. one kid told me to kill it cause it was good for nothing. But like you I can't bring myself to kill, so he went on his merry way.

Took pics of all my chickens today, (except a few who didn't cooperate) and thought I'd share! I don't think I've actually ever done this here before!

I have the sweetest rooster ever. His name is Harry and he needs a good home. He was kept as free-range by some people that lived about a quarter mile from me and they moved and left him behind. He made his way to my house and hung around outside my chicken pen for a month before I finally let the girls out to see how they would get along, It was instant love. He is polite and gentle and is always trying to find treats to give them. The other day I put canteloupe rinds out and he was picking little pieces off and calling them over. He picks it up and drops it over and over until they come for it! He does not over-mate them, usually he drops a wing and does a little dance to get them to squat for him. He keeps about 5 feet away from me and has never been the least bit aggressive. He is just a perfect rooster but I have one neighbor who complains about his crowing so he needs a new home. I hate to see him leave, honestly he is a pleasure to have around and is beautiful as well. I believe he is an Old English Game bantam but maybe someone else will know differently from his pictures. I live near Raleigh, but don't mind taking him anywhere he may have a good home. If any of you would consider adopting him or know someone who might, I would love to hear from you The two pictures were taken today and I have included a video that shows him saving treats for the girls.

Thanks!

What a sweetheart. Hope you find a good home for him.

Just popped on to say I moved my chicken (who is sitting on now 7 duck eggs...not sure who keeps stealing eggs, or WHERE they are going) into the broody coop. She has 7 Muscovy eggs, so in 35 ish days we will see if anything comes of them!

Hey Hollow - we were cleaning out the duck pool and I saw this HUGE black spider (not a wolf spider this time)...thought of you so I made DH take a photo of it for you!!
big_smile.png
It was freaking me out too much, so I was on the OTHER side of the yard while that was going on...mainly because when he tried to get it to pop out of the burrow, it "attacked" the stick he was using to gently nudge it. Had that been me, after screaming like the girl I am, I would have stabbed it to death with the stick and then set it on fire...LOL Anyway, he was having so much fun with the spider, he actually took a video of it "attacking" the stick. By the way...aren't spiders suppose to have 8 legs? This one has what looks like 10 (plus fangs.... <shudders>) my conclusion it is a FREAK of nature and is going to grow exponentially and attack our chickens before coming after us...

Anyway...not only did I think of you, but DH said, "hey, I should take a photo of it with the golf ball again for your friend."

So he was thinking of you too!!
