So sorry for the losses from Mother Nature's wildlife

As RF said........we relocate every snake we can catch
as we seems to ALWAYS have large numbers of the
rat snakes and they have quite often taken a pigeon
or young bird.....one even killed my pretty blue partridge
ADULT silkie hen and she was not a small silkie. There is
always more snakes that we can't catch to get the mice.
I think there are just SO many snakes that there isn't enough
mice for all of them.

turkeys are seasonal layers and not always consistant
on laying. Eggs can be eaten but are a little stronger flavored
than chicken eggs.....mixed with chicken eggs for omelets
or scrambled eggs and you won't notice them as much.....
great for baking.

Okay, thanks!
I was thinking about keeping a heritage turkey as a pet, but my husband isn't much on keeping pets that don't serve a purpose!
I really want a pair of peacocks, but I think I'm getting a little ambitious haha!

Hi all!
Haven't been on in forever! Stinking FLIES-rainy week again ahead looks like- what are y'all doing for fly control? I have pets around the coops too and hesitant about the toxic treatments/baits.
Have a great day!

We were just discussing this a few days ago. I use the stinky bags or jars that capture the flies and they can't get out. I also clean my pens/yard at least once a day early in the morning and take all poop way off to the woods on other side of pasture. I clean again in the evening whatever I see around the yard and the rooster pen (since they are up in their big run during the day). I also put up those misting things that spray out a mosquito/fly spray every few minutes and are safe to use around poultry. I put one in each pen/run. I think you have to do a multi pronged approach to get them down to a manageable number that doesnt drive you crazy. I also have those dairy spray bottles that I will blast on any congregation of flies that I happen to see around something. I can knock out 100 at a time with that stuff.

I have used the fly predators in the past and they work but you have to use them long-term in order to see a difference and chickens will eat them so you have to release them in safe areas.

I've found that keeping the pens/runs and yard cleaned regularly is the single most beneficial thing you can do to keep flies away!! It has become part of my daily routine just like cleaning horse stalls :(

I'd like to know other folks' solutions for keeping the chickens off the front porch and out of my potted plants!!! I've about had it. I even put field fence around the deck to keep them off and use a baby gate at the entrance but a couple of them still sneak in. Just drives me nuts.

I found this great stuff called Picaridin, it works for 12 hours, is water resistant and is like 80 times safer than DEET and it keeps the mosquitoes off of me, my horses, my dogs and my kids and if I accidentally get it on my chickens, it's nothing to worry about. Plus, it doesn't have an awful smell and it dries non-greasy.

Horse.com sells it as Centaura.

Okay. I counted. All of them. I sold more than I tallied. I'm down to 110 chickens and 35 turkeys. Quail are at 24. Until the next hatch. The front layer house has 45 on one side and 43 on the other. I'll be removing 11 Barnevelders to the auction this weekend, but moving the 15 from grow-out in. And I have seven in the house that will go into the Juvenile Detention Center with the poults tomorrow. My niece who came back from Georgia with me will help me build quail cages, so the coturnix will move outside. Then only the button quail will be left inside.

This works! I still have some cockerels to weed down, but they need to grow out a bit more first so I can choose well. Then the extra Wellies and Ameraucanas will go, too. One NN will be examined by Beth on Thursday and may go with her. The remaining RIR pullets will go as soon as the next age group starts laying well. I'm just starting to find pullet eggs.

I am slowly getting my flock the way I want it. Yay!

Wow! I didn't realize you had so many. I thought I was starting to have too many, with 6 outside and 8 babies inside. I do plan eventually to have several different breeds, but that is for the future, I have to finish getting my degree first. Then comes a job making money, so I can afford them all!
