Thank you all for the flea advice!
I tried to order revolution, but you need a prescription and blood work first, and I needed something ASAP so went with advantage.
Guineas are pretty, though I don't know much about keeping them.
Can they live with the chickens? Do they lay often/can you eat their eggs?

I just sold all 12 of my 3 week old lavender orpingtons yesterday to someone off craigslist for $50, I put them on there when I didn't think anyone was interested.
I kept 4 I'm growing out to make sure they are girls and will go down to 1 or 2.
If you still haven't found one by then, you can get first dibs.

I BELIEVE I picked out 3 girls and a boy, possibly 4 girls but these were being super tricky to sex! Some had full tails and big combs, some had no tail feathers at all and still tiny combs, some were completely feathered out, some were almost all fluff, no two looked exactly alike. Fingers crossed!

I was at an auction when the auctioneer said that guineas eat fire ants. I had to look that one up! After research I was thoroughly dissapointed to find that it seems NOTHING eats fire ants.

On one of the posts I read, a guy said he had actually taken a fire ant and bit into it. He said the little buggers are very bitter. So... I guess that is why nothing eats them! I was ready to buy a whole flock of guineas - noisy or not. Oh well, it was intersting research - and perhaps more interesting to find that someone would eat a fire ant to see how they taste.

My chickens LOVE fire ants. At the start of the warm weather this year we had about 4 hills pop up in a matter of days, I watched as my group of 30 scratched, ran away, scratched, ran away, until they had the fire ants in a frenzy and then as a group they'd pick'em off until they were no longer hungry. After about two weeks of this, all the fire ant hills were gone. Now a few pop up here and there, but they quickly make a meal out of them and then hurry on their way. And month two broody mommas with 4 week old babies began teaching them how to do it too. So my chickens are passing on the tradition of fire ant snacking

It's ok...I should have said something sooner. Hollow is going to save my Buff Orpingtons for me until I can find enough chicks to make the trip worthwhile. No harm, no fowl.

What kind of chickens do you have? I keep hearing it both ways (love them / hate them) so wonder if it's breed that makes the difference?

I use uncooked grits on all the ants around here, or a can of race fuel and a torch!

Fleas this year are ridiculous!!!! We don't have any inside pets and I'm getting bit from somewhere.
Hollows got some gorgeous birds! those buffs almost look cuckoo!!!! and fat!!!!
We're down to 5 birds in the big pen, 11 in the grow out, 3 in the other grow out and one lone chick that thinks she runs the place.

Hello everyone! Hope all have had a great day. This headache won't let up. Been kinda mopey today. stupid dog keeps chewing the floor.  I am going to have to replace the flooring and the linoleum! Chickens are out n about the yard picking at eveything besides their feed. Goofy chickens. Hubby just got attacked by a swarm of pterodactyls!!!! Using my potato scrubber to scratch with! Eew. 

All of this talk about different chicken breeds...MAN! I just told my DH tonight that I can't wait to move to a place that we have more space and I can have all sorts of chickens. Then it will really be a problem...

I took a picture of our most "mature" girl tonight. She has pretty red waddles & a nice Leghorn comb - all tipped over and cute. I just wanted your input - does it look a little dry? Maybe just because of the heat?! She is absolutely precious!
