I saw someone posted the other day that they had had chinchillas.
I know this is supposed to be about chickens, but I've been on google forever now and cant find my answer....

Chinchilla's need a dust bath.  I have a gigantic thing of D.E. I want to use up since my chicks have no interest in it.  Can I use that or do I have to buy those little containers specifically labelled chinchilla dust?  I can't find ingredients on either, but they look the same...
Don't use the DE! That stuff causes respiratory issues! Chinchillas are extremely sensitive. Stick with what has been shown not to harm them and you should be okay.

Don't have the chinchillas but I use the DE in a clean parmaesan cheese shaker after I clean out the coop to shake into the crooks and crevices of my coop and in the run around the edges to help with little tiny varmits,!!! When they start getting into their boxes, they are more /liable to get the mites/lice due to the warm climate

That is a far more standard use of DE.

My silkies kept turning out to be boys too after I'd get so attached.
Finally sucked it up and bought 3 sexed silkies chicks (minimum) from mypetchicken.com for $12.50 a piece plus $40 express shipping!!!!!
I didn't show my husband the receipt on that one, but wanted to know for sure they'd be girls!  From what I could find that was the only place that sold them as girls, besides another hatchery that DNA tested but it was hundreds of dollars just for one chick.
ps- hamburgs are really pretty too!

When I checked, I thought there was a minimum of 9, but that may not have been them. I just could not justify the cost, particularly since they're just play babies, lol.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, you guys are so helpful!
I will go pick up some of the chinchilla dust.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday!
That storm last night was CRAZY over here!
Hope the rain holds off today soooo much stuff to do!
I want to get my Fall garden in this weekend and build another pen for the turkeys.

Hi guys! Yardsale again today! Trying to make extra cash for the move. All that's left is the floor! Yey! Hubby was supposed to work today but he's yardsalling with me! Lol. Hope everyone has a great day! :)

Yes, I do love my polka dotted chickens! I think they sent a boy to propagate the species. ;)

i love the parmesan shaker idea! lol when i build my new coop this winter i plan on using de but for now i dont and am kind of still on the fence with it until i try it and all of my birds will be thoroughly cleaned before they step foot in the coop

i wouldnt pay that much they could be just saying that they r sexed but arent did they say how they did it i have heard many ways but none of them are very accurate

It would be wonderful to have a how quality silkie but the majority or silkies we recieved from murray mcmurray were males:/ and we are also thinking of selling all of our silkies and getting new hampshire reds , jersey giants , or maybe barred rocks. Seeing as silkies dont mature very fast. But my name is cody cunningham , ive lived in monroe my whole life, 19 years aint that long though haha. The hatchery isnt a huge business because we just started, we like to do everything by hand so we know the chicks and chickens are taken good care of, chicks are vacinated an will be sexed and placed into separate brooders for easy selection. And no we arnt like the major companies that sex the chick then drop it down a shoot into a basket, most likely i will be saying im sorry to every single one i vaccinate lol. We are also starting a website which is not yet viewable by public but i hope it will be up by next month because we will be up to our necks in chicks. Haha

id be interested in the hens to use as broodys the only market there is for pet quality silkies is exotic meat and broodys and pets not that big market around here im workin on getting all show quality ill put the word out for u its good to know there is a friendly hatchery right down the road
