Never been to Bristol.

You lucky dog, you...........have fun!!!!!

I'm great! got a light set up in my coop finally! I took a hanging work light, turned it sideways, hooked it on the outside wire of the coop so the ladies wouldn't get on it or the heat wouldn't be too much. (I know they get hot!) I have it on a timer! I don't claim to be an engineer soool...I finally got it set up and went to the house and realized that I had not put a light bulb in it!!!!! Had to go back and take it all down,,,thought I have to take the entire cage off of it (you don't!)....after I got it apart I realized that it had to be squeezed on one side to open!!!! Ok, maybe this should have been common sense! LOL Well, now the good part or maybe will be the bad part! The hook on the light had a small rubber cap on it....bright yellow. When I was trying to "undo" everything, it slid off into the run. When I finished, I looked for it and realized that my brahma, who has become the dominant and more aggressive of the group, had it in her beak and was trying to get away from the others with her treat. The others were chasing her. I ran around to the door thinking I could scare her to drop it! Yep, no one was running any longer and it was gone!!!! Now, if the brahma swallowed it...am I going to find her dead one morning? Because she is so big, will that help? By the way, I went out to the shed to close up and the light wasn't on......go ahead and laugh.........I didn't turn it on!
Use a LED light bulb. They are more expensive but they last a long time and don't put out a lot of heat.

Actually lizabel...I'm glad you said that because that's what I did use. Thanks for making me feel better about using this work light, I just can remember my dad's getting so hot.....I had it set to go off at 10 and come one at 4. My hubby said they never get to sleep to I turned to coming on at 5. Are these good hours?

NH how did the broody hen take to some chicks?

She rejected them immediately. We "exchanged" the eggs for the chicks at night while she was sleeping, but I think she knew. None of the eggs she was sitting on were developing at all. We stuck the 5 chicks under her, but she popped up once they started chirping and pecked at 2 of them. After pecking at 2 of them (no harm was done), she moved to the other side of the coop and ignored them. We brought them back into the house and placed them in the brooder. She is now out of the broody coop and is being "forced" to go back into general population!! LOL - talk about being the odd one out...she has been out of the flock for over 2 months...getting reacquainted ought to be interesting!

DUCK QUESTION for those of you who have ducks... This morning we caught 2 of our hens in an all out "death battle" fight. It resembled something I saw regarding drakes fighting (yes, I am positive they are both girls...LOL). Any idea why they might have been fighting? We have only 3 hens and 1 drake so I wouldn't think they would be fighting for attention. I will say the one hen losing (Reeces Cream) is a "whiter" hen than the other 2 (who are chocolate, same as the drake) and she tends to be the most submissive one (she is also illusive when it comes to mating, she prefers NOT to). Ideas? Suggestions on how to prevent/thwart this from happening??

Hey everyone out there! Do you think anyone could explain to me how obtaining a poultry dealer/chick dealer license thing works? I've read this PDFs and everything online and they constantly refer me to other big worded and technical PDFs and it doesn't make a whole a lot of sense... What exactly do you need to sell like chicks, hatching eggs, or larger full grown birds?

And when you like sell them on Craigslist and everything do you need a license or what? Could anyone please explain this to me? Its just confusing...
Thanks! Just trying to see what else I could do besides sell just eggs to eat.

Got some exciting news, my silkie Amber is sitting on 9 eggs. She started this last Wed. How many can she get under her? Right now she is in the coop but I think I'm going to move her on the 18th day and set her up in my little coop a rabbit hutch. Can this set-up stay in the pen with the other 2 after they hatch out or should they be some where else? Being she is providing the heat will I need a heat lamp? So many questions, my first with a mama hen. I think I read that you can wait 2-3 days before feeding is that right? I will like to give them the Mareks shot. In the catalog it tells you to give it in the back of the neck at 1 day old. What size needle do you use? These are little bantams so I know they will be tiny. MPC will not give the shot to bantams because of this. Can't wait till the first part of Sept. and hope I have more hens then roosters

Might keep 1 rooster. Will keep you all posted.
