It's the "new grandma" syndrome............you start seeing all
those cute baby things and just HAVE to get it for your grandbaby
............and who can resist getting noise makers for the baby.

Blueberry bushes in stock....how many? And now is the BEST time to plant all trees,.shrubs, and vines!!

I will.plant them too....plus I need the.$$$$ for my twins!!!

Awesome!
Do you have any old enough to have fruit this year? I think I need 2. I really want more, but we have no space, so 2 will have to do this year.
Ideally I'd like to pick them up around taking my daughter to preschool Tue/Th because its on Hay St & that's halfway there already. I could be there around 8:30, 9:30, 12:30 or 1:30 if any of those work (drop her off at 9 and pick up at 1).

Happy New Years everyone!

Hollow- Congrats!!

ITs a lovely 19 degrees here!! Finally starting to warm up though... I'm in the middle of having to go get all of the waterers and melting all the ice, cleaning them out, and getting them back to the hens! And of course running around taking care of the goats, dogs, and horses as well. Can't forget our one long ear! Hope all of you guys have had a wonderful holiday season!!!!!
thumbsup.gif

Really not looking forward to go back to school on Monday but I guess I have no control over that now do I?...

What do you guys think of my big guy? I've had him for a while!! Just have forgotten to show you guys. My friend actually got him when I got my dark brahama and splash orpington from Wildsriver. She got two orpington chicks and well the blue ended up being a rooster so we decided to take him off her hands. So we finally have a big rooster now!! He is so friendly and incredibly docile!

He's only a few weeks younger than our youngest hens but he is so much bigger than all of them!!!

Gotta show that tail!

His name is Tucker, because I have a teammate named Tucker who is extremely muscular and built. I mean to the extent we always mess with him that he does steroids (which we know he doesn't! we just mess with him)

Really wanted him to go with our Buff Orps and my splash orp!

A little while I posted a picture of my pullet (above) to see what you guys thought she might be... Is the general consensus still that she's a Delaware? haha

And finally figured out my little robin is an Araucuna Japanese Bantam mix! She's my favorite little hen! She's got a messed up bunch of genes though (haha). She's got a crossbill, no comb (like at all..), and has the Araucuna fluff on her neck!

One last question... sorry for about all of this!!! Just have to catch up with all of my chicken peeps! I mean I haven't posted anything all year!!! (Haha so sorry for the cheesy New Years joke; Just couldn't resist

). Anywayss these are my two pullets that I have in isolation... I'm still not sure at all what the issue could be.. That little bump thing you see on the cochins eye in the back is a similar build up to what happened in the Marans eye.. Eventually the marans build up faded away but took the eye with it.. There is no terrible smell coming from them, they are eating normal, drinking normal, and are extremely persistent on wanting to get out of the isolation pen... I mean the maran tries to dart out between my legs every time I feed them or try to mess with them... I also do not think whatever they have is contagious... because the original pen they were in (where I noticed the bubbly eyes) was cleared out of them and the cochin rooster they were with. They went into isolation and Elvis (the cochin rooster) was put with some other pullets (had no other place for him..). They have been in isolation for two solid months and in that time the rooster has snuck back into the area where they all were and he had stayed in there for a good two weeks because I wanted to make sure he didn't give anything to the other pullets... Well he was fine for the two weeks, decided he was tired of being alone and made a ruckus until I had the nerve to put him in with the other pullets again... Now since this has been going on for rather a long time I'm wondering if it is safe to put them back in their original pen.. It is next to the other pullets pen (it is my chick mini run, but don't have any chicks going right now). They wouldn't be able to be eating the same food and drinking the same water but they would be right next to them... I'm wanting them to get use to other chickens again, but I most definitely do not want my other birds having issues...

Just not sure what to do... and thought I should ask my chicken peeps first!!!

In the picture you can kinda see how the marans eye has completely gotten rid of the swelling but the eye dissolved as well.. and you can sorta see the swollen area on the cochin as well...

Hi everyone! I have been absent lately it is good to hear that everyone is still around. I hope those of you who were not feeling well will be better soon.

How did those who went to flock swaps do today? I went to the Sanford Flock Swap and sold the 5 hens I brought before I could even set up the cages with food and water. The 4 roosters took a bit longer but eventually sold too.

I really didn't want to bring anyone home and put them in the quarantine coop.

Someone asked (I think it might have been JTBass) about a coop that was open on the sides. Personally, I would add plastic to the open sides. I would leave the very top part of one wall open to ensure ventilation. I must add in a disclaimer... I probably keep my chickens more sheltered than they "need" but I would rather be safe than sorry.

On the topic of the COLD weather we have been having. I made some water "heaters" out of Christmas tins earlier this winter. I really like them. I make sure to keep them elevated so they are not in contact with bedding. They are on a timer so I can adjust the time they are on depending on the weather. I forgot to turn them on the other day and the water was frozen so I know they are necessary. I am probably going to switch from the timer to a thermocube as I like the one in my big coop.

DST, since you asked, I would continue to quarantine your birds with the eye issue from the others until you find out what it is. Just MHO.

I hope everyone does well through this cold snap. I love cold weather but this is ridiculous for the south....

Have a great evening!

DST, I did some research and am wondering if your chickens have an eye worm problem? Eye worms can destroy the chickens eye which is one reason I think this is a possibility. Google eye worm to see photos of chickens with eye worms. Are they similar? I found this post on how to remove them: http://alamwahd.com/en/share-learn/categories/videos/2158/datedesc/40/0/520. The video is rather graphic.

One way to treat them is to worm your chickens with a wormer that will be effective on eye worms. One post I read on here recommended Valbazen which is a great broad spectrum wormer . There may be other wormers that will work. Not all wormers are effective on all worms so make sure you use one that is.

From what I read, eye worms are much like other worms in that the worm will work their way through the tear duct then into the chicken's stomach. The worm is passed (pooped out) and eaten by a type of cockroach. The chicken then eats an infected cockroach and the worm works its way into the chickens tear duct then the cycle repeats.

IF this is the problem your chickens have, the good news is there is no reason to quarantine. The bad news is that the worms (while in the cockroaches) can move from one run to another. Wild birds get eye worms too, so they may have come from a wild bird.

Good luck.

Thank you Tammy!!!! I looked through the pictures and it does look a lot like what they have!!! I do hope that eye worm ends up being the issue just so it isn't as severe as like coryza or a respiratory disease...

VetRX is suppose to kill eye worms as well. A few drops in the eye and done. But I have never dealt with eye worm before. (will probably get it now
