Because she came up from Georgia for some outlet shopping. We're going up to Mebane for post-Christmas sales today. Then maybe our outlets tomorrow. She goes home Sunday. I will be tired, but she's good company.

I live near Rocky Mount, NC. We are getting ready to have some really cold weather blow in here and I am concerned about my ladies. They are in a 4x10 coop under the front wing of our shed and have always been in an open coop. 3 sides closed, one side open. I have hung old windows over the open area of the runs to block off as much of the draft from the west/north as I can. I always wanted them to not only have ventilation but I never wanted them to be used to an artificially warmed coop....due to the fear of power failure on our line. What can I do since we are looking at weather that is colder than what we usually have around here and then next Tuesday/nite it is supposed to be colder.....

According to the weather man, it is supposed to get below zero in Asheville, NC. That's gonna be cold for sure. Only thing I can suggest is to keep the wind off them. Have extra water stored so you can offer it to them several times a day. Be careful using a heat lamp as the fire risk is not worth it.

Good luck. I hope your ladies do well.

Hi everybody in NC. I am new to Chickens (my second winter with the girls) and was wondering what the worst conditions and coldest temps your girls have ever been exposed to were? How did everyone fair in those cold temps, and what breeds did the best? I thought it would be interesting to hear your stories.

I have to say last winter was a bit warmer, than this winter so far, and I have not done too much dif. than last year. I have a nice closed coop that's about 3 by 10, with lots of ventilation at the top. I have stapled cardboard up to block the cracks in the plank wood walls around the roost area to avoid drafts blowing onto my 5 ladies with no heat. At this point nobody SEEMS comfortable; they sit close but that is more just because the roost is running along the 3 ft. side of the coop, so that more of a space issue.( Nobody ever want to sit on the other available roost space) The chickens never even look to be puffed up for extra warmth. Just curious to know how most of keep care of your chickens in the winter months, and at what temp do your chickens need some extra TLC? Does anybody have any fun stories of what they have done that even chicken people might consider CRAZY, when temps really drop? Thanks everyone! Hope to hear your stories soon!

These are my kids; my two favorite people with my two favorite chickens! Ever try to get two kids plus chickens to all look nice for a photo. `Almost impossible I think! Sad story however, a hawk killed my little barred cochin baby a couple of weeks after this pic was taken. That was awful!!!! We miss her bunches. The Blonde hen is so sweet and just started laying the most wonderful blue eggs. We got her at Chicken Stock this fall, from Beth H. Thanks Beth! I love her ton,s and I hate to let my girls out of their run, in case that nasty hawk comes back!
