Had "Something" undetermined l my huge black English Orpington rooster, Elliot, today. The biggest bird on the place. Lots of easier pickings out there, but it had to go for my big guy. First bird I've lost in months. I'm bummed.

Oh no!!!
He was such a beautiful bird. I can't imagine what would have gotten a hold of him, he's so huge!
I'm so sorry for your loss!

Good morning folks    :frow

Wish we could get a little rain.........the grass is starting to
dry out and it won't be long before the bushes and trees
start to suffer. Some of my crepe myrtles have dying branches
in them from bad rain years and one has all but died. Watering
helps but a day a week of good gentle rain is what's needed.
Of course if I can find a way to keep the mud from getting to
the chickens that would be great too.  :lau

hope everyone has a good day  :caf
you can have some of my grass I need a mower its shoulder high but its green lol

Had a mouse that the snake missed show up in the feed bin (left the lid off again

), so I scooped the mouse up in a can and threw it to my main sumatra pen. I figured they would be like the rest of my pens of other breeds and just chase each other and steal it from each other. Boy was I wrong! They did chase each other, but they also flogged each other and got into flat out fights over this mouse. Guess next time I'll put it in a different pen when there is only one mouse.

Have a great day.

I started putting dead mice, meat trimmings, driveway roadkilled frogs, even a bitty that may die into my maggot farming auto feeder! I just cut the bottom of a 2 liter and hung it upside down over a bowl in the run with some wire mesh in it then fill it with dead things maggots instinctively go down so they fall in the bowl and the chickens love it ( circle of life! death fuels life )

All right chicken lovers, I need to borrow your expertise for guess that chicken!
I had a delivery today from an emergency sale of 25 surprise chicks, no way of knowing the breeds.
Some were obvious to me, others I wanted to run by you guys if you don't mind...

Breed #1 Standard Cochin? When I first saw the feathered legs and size I thought Brahma, but when I looked closer it is a single comb.

Breed #2: Partridge Rock? The dark coloring on the front of the legs and the single comb had me thinking Plymouth Rock, but the only brown ones I know of would be partridge.

Breed #3: This is the one tripping me up. From the yellow legs, chipmunk pattern, and flat comb all I can think of is a Rose Comb Brown Leghorn, but that seems like such an unlikely breed to be put in a surprise box and there are quite a few of them. An EE would also have the chipmunk pattern and flat comb, but I've never seen them with yellow legs especially all with yellow legs have you? All the other breeds I can think of off hand with the light legs and chipmunk pattern all have single combs... There are EE's in there with slate legs, but they look different than these few with the yellow legs.

And just for fun here's all of them

I've got a quail with a prolapsed vent.
We've gotten a few double yolkers the past week that I think were from her.
Usually my husband deals with the quail since they're on the ground I have to like crawl in to get the eggs, but I did it tonight and noticed one was looking off.
When I picked her up I could see the prolapse.

Do I cull or can I fix it?
Googling now....
