Yep,....I've been waiting all this time to get my coop built...depending on others.....waiting...waiting.. HAD THE CHICKENS AFTER THE PROMISE OF A COOP so I didn't jump the gun...I counted on their word...should have don't it myself! Been keeping the chickens in 3 kennels...been telling everyone they were not predator proof. I put down stakes, kept everything covered at night, even had windows strapped against the panals that I thought were vulnerable.. This morning, I found basically nothing but feathers. One head.. a lot of bent panels, torn tarps, and 3 out of 9 chooks left...2 of them I know are roos........ Have been crying every since found them gone. I know the dogs or whatever will be back tonigh. Don't have anywhere else to put them! Feel like I've got them one a silver platter. Guess I will finish the coop myself and THEN try to get some more...
So sorry

I am sorry no one kept their promise to help you build the coops.
Do you have all the materials ready or are they waiting for some of it?

I have lot of the materials sitting right here here! And to get it done and be predator proof....I Will start tomorrow after lunch! Tired of this crap! It will take me a while but it will be right!!

My mom and I finally have the time to strap down and really focus on building our permanent coops. We are also making our "chicken business plan". We are going to use Welsummers and Jersey Giants for eggs (JG for winter layers). I am also getting some chocolate orpingtons and are going to try and sell some chicks from them. Maybe some adult birds, still deciding. We are also keeping our japanese bantams for birthday parties for the little kids (maybe some Seramas).

One thing we are trying to decide, what is a good breed for meat (if we decide to do meat birds). I was curious, what breeds do you guys use for meat birds? Does anyone have recommendations for good dual purpose birds, or do they use strictly meat birds? Thanks in advance!

I was gone for a week or so for an elite gymnastic camp and came home to a bucket full of eggs. Mom didn't have the time to clean them yet. I literally had 9 dozen eggs to clean (literally exactly 9 dozen, no more no less). Haha my girls were surely on overdrive.

I think I also have some of the worst luck with broodies. I've had only 15 laying hens and about 7 have gone broody... I am using two for chicks and managed to break some of the others from being broody. Now one of my RIRs have gone broody and they aren't suppose to want to... lol

Jersey giants, good quality ones anyways, are a good dual purpose bird. Same with orpingtons and rir. But what people get from a hatchery or off of hatchery stock (I know some people will sell on different places and say its not from a hatchery, but their "breeders" came from hatchery lines) are not really dual purpose anymore.

Around my place the extra roosters that are hatched are either sold off young so we don't waste feed growing them out (the smaller egg laying breeds) or we raise them for us to eat (the bigger breed ones).

You'll have to find out what works for you.

We get in Cornish X at this time. I don't have room to keep a meat breed on top of what I already have. I'd have to build yet another chicken house, and I don't choose to. We also make soup of extra cockerels, or make dog food out of them.

Not the prettiest, but I thought I'd take a few pictures of my dun sumatras since I didn't have any.

About all you can tell by this photo is his color. Not the prettiest after the visit from the dogs, but alive. This picture was taken today.

Broody dun hen (wasn't in the pens that got attacked). The next 3 photos were taken after I had caught most of them up and put them in a new pen after the attack, so everyone was still very nervous.

A black hen with a dun and another black hen behind

The dun that was broody in the pen that got attacked

Dun hen's back to show color (picture didn't turn out too good)

Same hen as above photo. Which were taken today. They are still a little upset. She kept turning in the cage trying to get back to her flock and wouldn't relax.

Gonna have to remember to take some pictures of them once they regrow their feathers.

Good morning folks

I finally managed to get the lawn mowed but there is way
too much weed-whacking to be done........that will be at
least a 2 day project. There are so many things I want to
get done but the regular every day chores don't leave much
time to do other projects. At least I have things to keep me
busy and never bored.

Anyone know a home remedy for restless leg syndrome?

Hope everyone has a good day
