I'm getting upset with my chickens. They are at POL but I have yet to see anything. They have been freeloading on feed for months now, and they eat like cows. Gonna give them until the end of this month but for now I'm gonna start processing more roos, hopefully that'll scare the eggs out of them.

Have you thought about fermenting? Superfood will cut cost- has cut my feed billby 2/3 and their health can't be beat. ....

Chicken Processing Class!

When: September 13, 2014 Time: 10am Where: Franklinton, NC Cost: $25

Are you ready to take that extra step to being self sufficient? Do you have a yard full of extra roosters?

NDH is offering a class to learn how to humanely process your chickens. We will have a few chickens here that need to be processed and you are welcome to bring any extra roosters/chickens you have if you would like to take them home with you. Please let me know ahead of time how many you will be bringing. We will go over hand plucking and skinning. We will also go over the differences in meat birds and what works for you and your family. If you don't have your own birds to bring there will be some available for purchase.

All knives, tools, and gloves will be provided for you to use. Please make sure you wear old comfortable clothing.

What to bring:
Extra Roosters
Cooler full of ice(if you are bringing birds or take any home)
Bagged Lunch
Chair

Well behaved and supervised children are welcome! Please make sure to bring lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinks for them too!

So my roo is starting to do what Roos do. I saved him from a culling at 5 months old. I only have 3 hens not enough for him. So if anyone wants him I'm willing to drive either to statesville it to kernersville maybe Greensboro

So here's the girls. Day 2. One cochin (Hillary) is missing from the photo. The other cochin (Angie) seen here in the photo. Susie is the hybrid bottom right and the two buffs are Goldie and (name:TBD), Marilyn is a buff too, and a slightly younger pullet that is hand downs the smartest of the bunch - weird. The cochin birds are just bullies and like to perch high and punish the others. The hybrid is not too quick - unless its running. This is them in the morning...

I'd love to see the photo that goes with that description!

Good morning, everyone!

Morning,

Day 3...So we are new to having chickens as pets. We are looking for a farm to buy and may have found one in Aberdeen where these girls can spread their toes. The predator beacon will be on all the time there though. I never see road kill around here because its too built up causing cars to go slow. Kids everywhere. I wish these chickens would try to have some kids.

We take pictures daily. I will surely catch some of these attitudes on digits and show them to the world...crazy chickens, but the one young buff cochin is smart in comparison to the other feather draggers.

Till tomorrow, unless something exciting happens. Have a nice Labor Day.

Now that the meat birds are all in the freezer, I get to start on my grand genetics problem of eliminating vulture hocks from my Golden Cuckoo Marans. If you have interest in such things, I'm writing it up on my FB farm page, Hollow Oak Farm, LLC. It'll be a very slow process, but I am finally beginning, at least!

Any polish experts out there? My bird has not developed horns but I shave not seen it crow or sit. The other polish roo does not seem interested in it and it does not seen in to any of my hens. It is 6 months old. Can anyone tell if it's a roo or a hen?
