Glad you released the possum, too. I've had them steal eggs, and have assumed it was them on a few deaths, but I've only ever for sure caught them eating....cat food. I relocate, too. A state park when possible, far away from other people with chickens.

Good luck finding homes for roosters. Most people already have plenty. Purebreds stand a chance as people are looking for new bloodlines, but crossbreeds really don't. We'll be putting at least seven roosters in the pot this weekend...two gorgeous OEs, three Buff Orpingtons, one Golden Cuckoo Marans and one splash English Orpington. Wish I could keep them all, but we just can't. younger birds will replace them all.

they are Japanese bantam cross with silkie. id prefer they wouldn't be sold to be eaten, but whatever has to go may go.....

we have done that.....rescued and raised babies from road kill moms but we are also
licensed rehabilitators. You actually can't keep them as they are state property and you
have to be trained and approved the rehabilitate them and then release them.......but
they are SOOO fun to raise up.

My DD has a nn silkie rooster. He has done just as well as the rest of my birds.

Opossums are actually loners, why they tend not to get rabies. Unless they are mating (one night fling kinda thing) or are a mom with babies, they tend to steak out their area and stay to it.

Yes the NNs are in the area and come in several types (ie silkie, ee, think I even seen some polish ones too). Come spring you could probably gets hatching eggs or chicks, right now most people I know only have started birds for sale (none are nns though). My DD got hers from Bhep off of here.
