What are the most common predators in NC? Planning to move there next year and would like to make sure my new coops will accommodate for any new predators I will be facing. Thanks

raccoons, possums, rats, skunks, weasels, minks, snakes, foxes, coyotes, dogs, cats, owl, hawks and other birds of prey of all sizes, eagles depending on location, bears, humans. I am sure someone will add more.

Thanks. I will research each of them. My dogs keep most things at bay here but we don't have bears like NC. I've been thinking of putting an electric fence around the coops and runs to deter most small predators

Good morning folks

Our coops here each have an enclosed covered run. We don't truely
free-range as some years ago we had an entire flock of over 40 birds
disappear in less than a week to two-legged predators. We don't have
much of a bear problem here and most of our loses, the few we have,
are to snakes. Good coops and runs does help hold down loses to
predators. Hope that helps.

Hey y'all. I need some advice. Not on a chicken this time. My cat has been vomiting for 2 days now. She won't eat anymore because it comes right back up. Can someone please tell me what to do here? Funds are tight right now so I don't think taking her to the vet is an option. unless anyone knows of a vet near nash, wilson or wake counties that doesn't want everything right then and there. I live in bailey if that helps. I've cried and cried.

It is possible poison and only a vet can help there unless you
can get the cat to eat charcoal. I recommend calling a vet and
ask for payments. If you explain the need and have a down
payment some vets will work with you on it. Good luck and the
kitty is better soon.

It's really important for cats to eat. If they get sick and stop eating, it can cause liver damage fairly quickly. Taking her to the vet is the best option. I suggest applying for a care credit card which is low interest and accepted my most veterinarians. If that really isn't possible, you really do need to get some food in her at least. Boil some chicken with no seasonings and shred it when it's tender (or cook some ground beef instead) and mix it with plain rice. Try to get her to eat some of that. It's bland and easy to digest. To get her interested in it, you can add just a little tuna or tuna water from the can. Keep the mixture in the fridge and warm it a bit before serving. Give her small amounts several times a day. If she eats too much at once, she'll probably throw it up. Better to only eat small quantities and keep it down.

I really hope she gets better quickly! I might be wrong, but didn't you have problems with a neighbor hurting your animals before? I hope he's not leaving poison out for your animals to eat...

My cat nala passed a few years ago. She stopped eating. She would drink excessive amounts if water at a time and only vomited bile. I found her limp in my room one morning and tried to give her cpr, but it didnt work nor wouldve i been able to save her. We send her to NC state for an autopsy and they said her liver was greatly enlarged. Hopefully you baby gets better. I would definitely take her to a vet before its too late.

I would try to hydrate her if you cant do the vet, but the longer you wait the more expensive of the bill if you end up going. Definitely try to dip her mouth in water so she at least drinks

We only have bears in the mountains. Eastern and central parts of the state don't have to worry about them.

@sbrooks88 - I'm so sorry about your cat.

All, I wanted to ask for your thoughts on the sex of this chicken. He was sold to me as a sexed male. He was also sold as a standard size, which is clearly not right. He's the same size as my silkie. I am also seriously questioning whether this is really a cockerel. I haven't seen any eggs yet, but his coop is not lit, so that could be due to daylight hours. I also have seen zero signs of trying to mate or crow or act like a rooster in any way. There are no other adult roosters in the flock and he's low on the pecking order, but not the bottom. And I'm not good at this, but the saddle and hackle feathers look quite rounded to me. He's just over 6 months old (28 weeks). Thanks in advance!
