I finally set up a nesting box in the chicken run. I just needed some hay. It was expensive though 6.50 for a bale...smh oh well it was kinda big so it will probably last me a while. I saw 2 girls peeking in, hopefully the eggs will appear after the solstice, in 10 days.

I will be going to the poultry show in Smithfield and that will be the last show I attend in the USA. I am moving to the Philippines to be with my wife. Her mother just passed away and her father has had a stroke and is not doing well. So I'll take my little bit of Chicken Smarts to the Philippines with me. Will try to make arrangements with another BYC'r there to get some Austrolorp and some Buffs or Reds and start all over. My dream was to get a flock of Light Sussex, about 30. I am not giving up on the Sussex, it will just take longer than I wanted. Lot of paperwork and cost to import live ones or eggs, plus the cost of a round trip ticket to either New Zealand or Australia. But, God willing I will get them.

Maybe I'll get a few of the local chickens known as Kabir. Which in the Philippine language means "big". They are a dual purpose chicken that lays about 200 eggs per year. I will also try to do some incubating, which is not that easy there because the natural humidity is usually about 70% and above. I have an idea that I would like your opinion on. What if I build an enclosure for my incubator and put a dehumidifier with it?

I will still be lurking on BYC a little longer. And then be off the internet until I get everything set up in the Philippines (Cagayan de Oro City).

I wish everyone a great day and a happy Holiday Season.

How about free. Ask your feed/hay dealer if they have any dry loose or busted bales you can have for nests. If it ain't for feed they will normally give it away. At least they do around here.
I didn't think to ask that. They were so nice they probably would or ask for half the price. (business is business i understand)

Or find a friend with horses, sheep, or goats. I rake up the hay my livestock drop before it gets dirty and use it for nest box hay. It would otherwise go to waste.

Long day today! Tammyfarms and I went up to Raleigh and then the outlets, doing a bit of Christmas shopping, and just having some fun. Got some good consumable gifts for the adult kids, and of course a few things for me! Came home to do lock-up. Then lost Levi! He wasn't coming when called, and although he'll bark AT things, he won't bark FOR things, so we couldn't tell where he had gotten to! Finally found him in the chicken moat. He must have snuck through the empty Juvenile Detention Center while I was closing up Grow-out. I missed a 190 pound Great Dane! Go figure. But he's found and rescued now. Poor guy!

Check out the thread here on BYC called 'Getting the flock out of here...Diary of a Crazy Chicken Man'.
It's funny and interesting telling about his adventures with bringing and hatching eggs in the Philippines.
Good luck with birds over there and hope you have a safe trip.
