I'm back in business! After not having chickens for almost 3 years, I woke up this morning with 7 newly hatched chicks in my incubator. My wife, who gave me "the look" when I told her I had purchased eggs and put them in the incubator, is more excited than I am.

First hatch ever!!!

Attempting dry incubation method. Trying not to get too stressed that all three thermometers read a different temperature!

I'm hoping for this soon!!!

I had them and wasn't impressed. I know someone in NC that breeds them if you are interested in Eggs or Chicks.

I read a commentary on the Bielefelders in America by someone from Germany who knows the breed there. His comment was that there's no comparison, and the North American birds need a lot of work. I decided to go with Dorkings, still rare but not as hyped by the "imported" branding.

Good luck with your hatch! Put a digital medical thermometer in there and use it to test the accuracy of your thermometers. If it's a still air incubator, you'll have some hotter and colder areas. Moving the eggs around in the incubator each day can help compensate. I stuck a computer fan in mine and it helped a whole lot. Do you have a hygrometer (to measure humidity)?

Oooo, good idea with the med thermometer, I have a ton of those! Yeah, the black circle on the bottom left is a reptile therm/hygro, but it is reading 1.5-2 degrees hotter than the bulb thermometer, which I calibrated in ice water with a cooking thermometer. I guess we'll see in 3 weeks!
