I moved here from southern New Jersey, close to the Jersey shore (nothing like the show, lol) If you take I-26 towards Spartanburg out of Ashville and then pick up Highway 74, Gaston is about 2 hours east of Ashville.

If you have youngin's they may be attending school into mid June! Most of the school systems up that way are county systems. If the buses can't get out to the boonie then all the school are closed not just the boonies.

Does any one know of any good chicken swaps? I have been looking on the asheville craigslist but can find any hens

That the way it is here, because the roads are so curvy and are very steep all schools close in the county even if it's just a light snow fall. allaboutyoupetsitting, there use to be a swap over in maggie valley, do you get the Iwanna they use to advertise in it. Not Maggie Valley, over on the other side of Waynesville. sorry I can't remember the name. Ya'll have a good night and stay warm

I have looked at the Iwanna I have a friend that went to the poultry swap and they where not happy with what was there. But I do want to go and see for myself it might of just been that day. I was just wondering if there was any other ones. Have you ever been to the swap?

There's a swap held the first saturday of each month in Mills River. It runs from May through October (I think).....that's where I sell alot of pet quality Silkies. I don't know of any others, but I'm always looking.

Have fun shopping in Asheville today Miss Lydia?

With the wind gone, it felt soooo good to get outside and get a little work done. I hope and pray this winter isn't as bad as the one we had last year. We were actually stranded on the mountain for 2 weeks. I don't mind~~~I'm always well stocked, but my FIL and my husbands health is pretty bad and I knew the rescue squad couldn't get to us if we needed them.

LOVE your chicken house Miss Lydia.....it's so "finished" and neat....mine always looks like a work in progress~~probably because it is.

See you'll in the morning

My only caution and advise about swaps it that you have to be really really careful. You never know what you are bringing home that may bring sickness and disease to your existing flock. I have never been to one and don't plan on it, never heard good things. I would start with fellow NC and even SC bycers first, there is also a NC/SC swap thread over in "Chickenstocks", you could post a wanted ad. JMO for what it's worth.

I would rather get some chickens from a breeder but cant seem to find any one. Do you know of any breeders? I am not to picky on what breed I would just like them to be at least ok layers and good broodies to if possible.
