they are making it thru this bitter winter just fine and I am in the foothills! If you want chickens that are just going to free range and then go find a perch under shelter at night, pretty much self sufficient per say, then I would say yes you would need winter hardy. So it just depends on your own personal preferences of how you will manage your flock. Hope this helps.
