Not sure if that is a filling or if it has dinner stuck in its teeth!

Let me preface this by saying I am new to this as well, but I have been researching coops for the last 3 mos and began mine this weekend. As far as not providing heat, I would at least insulate the walls and ceiling if you can. I know we dont get many stretchs of multiple sub freezing days, but we do get them and everything I've read says that this is tuff on all but the hartiest breeds. One other note is good cross ventilation capability of the coop. Our Temps change SO dramaticly from am to pm around here it needs to be versatile. Honestly, I'm sure the above info is somewhat remedial but it helped me...

Anyways, good luck with picking out breeds. I hear Orps are really good mommies...

I don't do insulation either..
Ventilation is a MUST .......

I do have a normal 75 watt bulb on for them when it is icy or snowy. Had to - idiots were in the sleet, on purpose, and still would not stay in.
I had one that braved the snow....made it out to where it was 6" deep and just stood and did not move. After 10 minutes. I gave in and went out to "rescue" him.

The chickens did quite a bit of ice skating too.

One time the "Revenuers" went out to arrest my Great-Great-Grandfather Clem's brother, Liz (Ulysees). Liz convinced them that he was Clem. They arrested Clem and took him into town (Columbus, NC). THERE the "Revenuers" were told that they had the wrong brother. So the let Clem go and never did catch Liz. Another, brother, Greenberry, was the Justice of the Peace. ALL of them brothers had some "shine" stashed somewhere about.

Ha-Ha !!!
